I Thought My Fiancée Was Choosing Her Male Best Friend — Then I Discovered She Was Protecting Him From a Deadly Secret

Chapter 7

Sophia’s mother had kept one secret for eighteen years.

When Ethan showed her the notebook, she cried.

“I knew someone was involved.”

“Who?”

“Victor.”

She explained that Sophia’s father had worked with Victor before turning against him.

When he tried to leave, he threatened to expose everything.

Then he died.

She had been warned never to speak.

Sophia was twelve.

Too young to understand.

Her mother had protected her by calling it an accident.

Sophia listened to the story in silence.

For years, she had believed her father died because of bad weather and reckless driving.

Now she learned his death might have been connected to a criminal empire.

She looked at Ethan.

“Why didn’t anyone tell me?”

Her mother began crying.

“Because I was afraid.”

Sophia hugged her.

“I understand.”

Later that night, Sophia stood outside alone.

Ethan joined her.

“I’m sorry.”

She smiled weakly.

“Everyone keeps saying that.”

“What else can I say?”

“Nothing.”

She looked at him.

“I spent all these years wondering why Dad never came home.”

Ethan took her hand.

“Maybe now we can find out.”

She nodded.

The prosecutor secured the notebook.

A new investigation was opened into Sophia’s father’s death.

Victor disappeared.

His offices were empty.

His private jet left the country.

Police issued an alert.

The pressure increased.

Then Sophia received a message.

Meet me alone if you want to know how your father died.

No name.

No location.

Just an address.

She didn’t tell Ethan.

She went alone.

The address was an abandoned hotel.

She entered.

Someone stepped out of the darkness.

Not Victor.

Daniel.

He looked terrified.

“Why are you here?”

Sophia froze.

“I got a message.”

“So did I.”

“Who sent it?”

Daniel shook his head.

“I don’t know.”

Then the lights turned on.

And Victor Hale was standing across the room.
