Clara drove home in silence.
Ethan was sitting in the living room.

“You know.”
She stood in front of him.
“You own Sterling Meridian.”
He said nothing.
“How long?”
“Years.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Would it have changed how you treated me?”
She opened her mouth.
No words came.
He looked at her.
“You laughed at my job.”
She looked down.
“You compared me to other men.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“You called me small.”
“Ethan…”
“You told your friends I was harmless.”
She closed her eyes.
“I was wrong.”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you ever tell me?”
“Because I wanted to know whether you loved me when you thought I had nothing.”
That sentence destroyed her.
“Did I fail?”
He didn’t answer.
She took a step toward him.
“I love you.”
He looked at her.
“Do you?”
“Yes.”
“Or do you love what you just discovered?”
She froze.
That question hurt because she didn’t know.
Ethan stood.
“You’re CEO because you earned it.”
She stared at him.
