After the celebration, Clara returned to the penthouse she believed they rented.
She kicked off her shoes.
“I’m exhausted.”
Ethan removed his jacket.
“You did well.”
She smiled.
“I know.”
He looked at her.
“Did you mean what you said tonight?”
“Which part?”
“About me.”
She shrugged.
“You’ve always been insecure about your career.”
“Is that what you think?”
“Yes.”
He nodded.
“What if it isn’t?”
She laughed.
“Then what is it?”
He looked at her.
“You don’t know me as well as you think.”
Her expression hardened.
“After eight years?”
“Exactly.”
She walked toward the bedroom.
“I’m not doing this tonight.”
“Ethan.”
She turned.
“Do you know what happens tomorrow?”
“Your first board meeting.”
“Exactly.”
She smiled.
“And I intend to walk into that room as CEO.”
Ethan nodded.
“Then do it.”
“Without you.”
He looked at her.
“You never needed me.”
Clara smiled.
“Finally, you understand.”
She closed the door.
Ethan stood alone in the living room.
