Unaware I Owned the $20B Company That Just Made Her CEO, My Wife Made Me the Joke of Her Celebration
Chapter 2
Eight years earlier, Ethan and Clara had met when they were both working at a small consulting firm.
Clara was ambitious from the beginning.
She wanted promotions.
Recognition.
A corner office.
Ethan was different.
He worked hard, went home quietly, and never talked about his family.
Clara interpreted that as lack of ambition.
They married after two years.
At first, she admired his calm nature.
Then her expectations changed.
“Why aren’t you applying for management?”
“I don’t want it.”
“You don’t want more?”
“I have enough.”
She would laugh.
“You think too small.”
Ethan never argued.
What Clara didn’t know was that Ethan had no interest in corporate titles because he already had more power than the executives fighting for them.
His grandfather had established a holding company years earlier.
When Ethan inherited control, he made one decision.
Stay anonymous.
He wanted to build something without becoming famous.
He also wanted to avoid people who loved wealth more than people.
So he lived simply.
No private jets.
No designer suits.
No luxury cars.
He drove an ordinary sedan.
He rented an ordinary-looking house.
And he worked a normal corporate position inside one of his own companies.
Clara never questioned it.
She assumed his ordinary life meant he had ordinary ambitions.
By their sixth year of marriage, the difference became painful.
Clara began comparing him to other executives.
“Mark’s wife just got a new penthouse.”
“Good for them.”
“You’re impossible.”
One evening, Ethan came home with flowers.
Clara barely looked at them.
“I have dinner with the board tonight.”
“That’s fine.”
“You never ask about my career.”
“I ask all the time.”
“Not seriously.”
Ethan looked at her.
“You want more.”
“Yes.”
“And you’re going to get it.”
She laughed.
“Not because of you.”
He smiled faintly.
“No.”
She didn’t know how literal that answer was.
