They Took the Wrong Road in America — By Morning, the Entire Village Wanted Them Dead

Chapter 7

They escaped through the forest.

For hours they walked.

Eventually, they reached an old ranger station.

Lucas opened the door.

Inside were maps covering the walls.

Maya noticed dozens of red marks.

“What are those?”

Lucas hesitated.

“Disappearances.”

Ethan studied the map.

They formed a pattern.

Every missing person had been traveling along the same route.

All roads led toward Bellweather.

“This wasn’t random.”

“No.”

Lucas pointed to the oldest mark.

“That’s where it started.”

Ethan looked at the date.

1981.

Then Maya noticed something.

A name beside it.

Daniel Mercer.

She stared.

“Your sheriff?”

Lucas nodded.

“He was sixteen.”

“What happened?”

“His parents disappeared.”

Maya looked confused.

“Then why would he protect them?”

Lucas’s face hardened.

“Because they gave him a choice.”

“What choice?”

“Join them.”

Silence.

“Or disappear too.”

Ethan realized the truth.

Mercer wasn’t the mastermind.

He was a prisoner.

Just like many others.

Suddenly, the door opened.

Evelyn stood there.

She was holding a revolver.

Lucas immediately raised his hands.

“Evelyn.”

“Don’t.”

She looked at Ethan and Maya.

“You need to leave.”

“We tried.”

“I know.”

She lowered the gun.

“There’s another road.”

Ethan stepped forward.

“Why are you helping us?”

Evelyn looked toward the floor.

“Because I helped build this place.”

Maya froze.

“What?”

Evelyn’s eyes filled with tears.

“My husband was one of the men who started it.”

She explained that she had spent decades helping families disappear.

Some were criminals.

Some were witnesses.

Some were innocent.

But eventually the network stopped distinguishing between them.

“Once you knew too much, you belonged to Bellweather.”

Ethan asked:

“Why didn’t you leave?”

She smiled sadly.

“Because my daughter was one of the missing.”

Maya’s expression softened.

“Where is she?”

Evelyn looked toward the window.

“She’s here.”

Before anyone could speak, gunfire erupted outside.

The windows shattered.

Evelyn fell.

Lucas grabbed her.

“Evelyn!”

She pressed something into Maya’s hand.

A small brass key.

“Church.”

Then she whispered:

“Under the bell.”
