They Took the Wrong Road in America — By Morning, the Entire Village Wanted Them Dead
Chapter 12
They ran toward the mountains.
Behind them, Bellweather burned.
Buildings were being destroyed.
Files disappeared into flames.
People fled through the streets.
Ethan carried the camera.
Maya carried her mother’s final documents.
They reached an overlook.
Below them, the entire village was visible.
Then Maya saw something.
A second road.
Hidden behind the trees.
They followed it.
At sunrise, they reached the highway.
A truck stopped.
The driver called 911.
Within an hour, federal agents arrived.
But Ethan didn’t trust them.
Neither did Maya.
One agent approached.
“My name is Sarah Collins.”
She showed them identification.
“We’ve been looking for Bellweather for years.”
Ethan asked:
“How did you know where we were?”
She paused.
“We intercepted a transmission.”
“From who?”
The agent looked at Maya.
“Your mother.”
Maya’s face fell.
“She’s dead.”
“We know.”
Sarah handed her an envelope.
Inside was a photograph.
It showed Maya as a child.
Standing beside her father.
But there was another person in the photograph.
Thomas Vale.
The federal agent from Ethan’s father’s photographs.
Maya turned it over.
A message was written on the back.
If she ever returns to Bellweather, tell her the truth.
Ethan stared at the photograph.
“Where is Vale?”
Sarah looked away.
“Dead.”
“When?”
“Three days ago.”
Silence.
Maya whispered:
“Then who has been running Bellweather?”
Sarah didn’t answer.
She didn’t need to.
Ethan understood.
Someone had known they were coming.
Someone had placed the photograph in the motel.
Someone had manipulated the road.
Someone had reopened the old operation.
Maya looked back toward the mountains.
Bellweather was disappearing behind smoke.
But the truth had not died with it.
Then Ethan’s phone vibrated.
One message.
From an unknown number.
You found the village.
Another message appeared.
You still haven’t found the people who built it.
Ethan showed Maya.
Her face went pale.
A final message arrived.
And one of them is standing beside you.
They looked around.
The federal agents stood nearby.
So did the truck driver.
So did Sarah Collins.
Nobody moved.
Then Sarah slowly reached into her coat.
Ethan raised his camera.
Maya stepped backward.
And Sarah smiled.
Not nervously.
Not fearfully.
Almost knowingly.
“Now,” she whispered, “you finally understand why Bellweather was never supposed to be found.”
The screen went black.
