They Took the Wrong Road in America — By Morning, the Entire Village Wanted Them Dead
Chapter 6
They escaped through a drainage tunnel behind the church.
The tunnel opened near an abandoned mechanic shop.
A man was waiting there.
“Get in.”
Ethan recognized him.
Lucas Reed.
The mechanic from the gas station.
Maya hesitated.
“Why should we trust you?”
Lucas looked toward the church.
“Because my father disappeared here.”
He started the truck.
“My family has been trying to leave Bellweather for twenty years.”
Ethan climbed in.
“Then why are you still here?”
Lucas laughed bitterly.
“Because leaving isn’t as easy as you think.”
He drove them toward the mountains.
“My father found the archive in 2004.”
“What happened?”
“He went to the police.”
Maya looked at him.
“Which police?”
Lucas stared through the windshield.
“Bellweather police.”
Silence.
“They found his truck two days later.”
“Was he dead?”
Lucas shook his head.
“Never found him.”
Ethan looked at the mountains.
“Why are people disappearing?”
Lucas didn’t answer immediately.
Then he said:
“Because Bellweather was built on a lie.”
“What lie?”
“That this is a normal town.”
He explained that decades earlier, Bellweather had been used by a network of criminals involved in identity theft, illegal adoption, and witness concealment.
Tourists who discovered the operation became liabilities.
Some were killed.
Others were forced to disappear.
But over time, the criminals developed something more disturbing.
They began replacing missing people.
New identities.
New documents.
New lives.
Some residents of Bellweather were not who they claimed to be.
Maya whispered:
“How many?”
Lucas looked at her.
“Almost everyone.”
The truck suddenly stopped.
Lucas looked at the road.
A fallen tree blocked the way.
Then headlights appeared behind them.
Another vehicle.
Lucas cursed.
“They found us.”
Ethan looked toward the mountains.
“Can we go around?”
Lucas shook his head.
“Not anymore.”
The headlights grew brighter.
Then the vehicle stopped.
Sheriff Mercer stepped out.
He raised his weapon.
“Lucas.”
Lucas locked the doors.
Mercer shouted:
“Don’t make this harder.”
Ethan looked at Maya.
“There’s something he doesn’t want us to find.”
Maya nodded.
“Then let’s find it.”
