They returned to the church before dawn.

The building was empty.

Maya climbed the bell tower.

Under the old wooden platform was a metal hatch.

The brass key fit perfectly.

Inside was another room.

Not an archive.

A control room.

Maps.

Radio equipment.

Surveillance monitors.

Photographs.

Hundreds of photographs.

Maya stared at the screens.

Ethan found a cabinet.

Inside were files.

One was labeled:

PROJECT BELLWEATHER.

He opened it.

The project had started as a witness protection operation.

But it had been corrupted.

Officials, criminals, businessmen, and local authorities had turned it into a private system for making people disappear.

Bellweather became a place where identities could be erased.

The worst discovery came next.

A list of names.

Politicians.

Judges.

Police officers.

Federal agents.

Business owners.

People across the United States had paid to make problems disappear.

Maya turned another page.

The newest entry was dated three weeks earlier.

TARGET: ETHAN COLE.

TARGET: MAYA BENNETT.

Ethan’s face went pale.

“Why us?”

Maya looked at the file.

There was one final page.

A photograph of Ethan’s father.

Ethan froze.

“My dad.”

He had been dead for fifteen years.

Under his photograph was a sentence:

SUBJECT DISCOVERED BELLWEATHER IN 2009.

Ethan couldn’t breathe.

“My father knew.”

Maya looked at him.

“Maybe that’s why you became obsessed with abandoned places.”

He shook his head.

“I never knew.”

Then a voice came through the radio.

“Ethan.”

He recognized it.

Sheriff Mercer.

“Your father tried to expose us.”

Ethan grabbed the microphone.

“Did you kill him?”

Silence.

Then:

“No.”

A pause.

“He disappeared himself.”

Ethan stared at Maya.

The radio crackled again.

“But he left something for you.”
