The Twin Sisters Rescued a Baby Left Beside the Garbage — Then Refused the Millionaire’s Reward and Exposed a Terrible Secret
Chapter 7
By that evening, the story had changed.
Marcus was no longer simply the grieving father whose newborn had been abandoned.
Police wanted to know why a vehicle belonging to his company had been near the alley.
Marcus insisted he had never sent anyone there.
“I didn’t know where Noah was,” he told Detective Bell.
“Your company vehicle was there.”
“I have two hundred employees.”
“Who had access?”
“I don’t know.”
Bell watched him.
“You don’t know who drives your vehicles?”
“Not every vehicle.”
“Who manages the fleet?”
Marcus didn’t answer immediately.
Then he said,
“My brother.”
“Daniel?”
“Yes.”
Lena heard the conversation from across the police station waiting room.
She had brought the twins because she had no one to leave them with.
Marcus saw her.
He approached.
“Are you okay?”
“I’m fine.”
“You shouldn’t have had to come here.”
“I wanted answers.”
Marcus nodded.
“I do too.”
Then a man stepped out of the hallway.
Tall.
Gray suit.
Silver watch.
He looked remarkably like Marcus.
Daniel Vale.
He stopped when he saw Lena.
His eyes moved to the twins.
Then to Noah.
Something flickered across his face.
It was gone so quickly Lena almost missed it.
Fear.
Not surprise.
Fear.
Daniel walked toward them.
“Marcus.”
“Daniel.”
“What are you doing here?”
“Finding my son.”
Daniel’s eyes moved to the baby.
“I heard.”
Marcus stared at him.
“You heard?”
Daniel’s mouth tightened.
“Everyone heard.”
Detective Bell came out of the hallway.
“Mr. Vale, I need another statement.”
Daniel looked at him.
“Of course.”
Before leaving, Daniel glanced at Lily.
She was staring at his hands.
There was a thin scar across his right thumb.
Lily whispered,
“Mom.”
“What?”
“He was there.”
Daniel stopped walking.
Bell turned.
“What did you say?”
Lily looked frightened.
“He was there.”
Daniel’s face had gone completely still.
Bell asked,
“Where?”
“The alley.”
Daniel looked at Marcus.
Then at Lena.
“I have never seen these children before.”
Lily shook her head.
“You were in the black car.”
Bell stepped toward Daniel.
“Mr. Vale, stay here.”
But Daniel’s expression changed.
Not guilt.
Calculation.
He turned toward the exit.
Bell caught his arm.
“Where are you going?”
“I need my lawyer.”
“You’re not under arrest.”
“Then I’m free to leave.”
“No.”
Bell’s grip tightened.
“Not yet.”
