Marcus Vale looked at the only chair in the room.
One leg had been repaired with a strip of duct tape.
He sat anyway.
Lena remained standing.
For several seconds, nobody spoke. The twins watched him. Marcus kept his hands together between his knees, his expensive coat making the room look even smaller.
“I can arrange a better place for you,” he said finally. “A real apartment. Heat. Running water. Whatever you need.”
Lena’s eyes narrowed.
“We have a place.”
Marcus glanced at the bucket beneath the leaking corner of the ceiling.
“I can see that.”
“You can help the baby,” Lena said. “Not buy us.”
Marcus nodded.
“I understand.”
But before he could explain what he meant, his phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
The expression on his face changed.
“Who is it?” Lena asked.
Marcus stood.
“My attorney.”
He answered.
“Yes?”
A pause.
Then another.
Marcus turned toward the door.
“What do you mean the hospital file is missing?”
Lena watched him carefully.
Marcus lowered his voice.
“No. Don’t call me later. Find it now.”
He ended the call.
June whispered to Lily.
“Why did he look scared?”
Marcus heard her.
He looked at the twins.
And for the first time since entering the shack, he seemed less like a millionaire who had come to give something away and more like a man who had just discovered that something had been taken from him.
