Marcus arrived less than an hour later.
He looked at Rachel.
She looked at him.
Neither spoke.
Detective Bell stood beside the door.
Daniel was in custody.
The flash drive had been copied.
But there was still one problem.
Bell asked Rachel,
“Why didn’t you go to the police?”
Rachel looked at Marcus.
Then down at her hands.
“Because I didn’t trust the police.”
“Why?”
“Because Daniel had someone inside.”
Bell’s expression hardened.
“Who?”
Rachel shook her head.
“I don’t know.”
Marcus stepped forward.
“You knew.”
Rachel looked at him.
“You knew about the hospital records.”
Marcus went pale.
Lena turned.
“What hospital records?”
Marcus said nothing.
Rachel laughed once.
It wasn’t a happy sound.
“You see?”
She looked at Lena.
“This is what he does.”
Marcus’s voice was quiet.
“Rachel.”
“No.”
She backed away.
“You don’t get to do that anymore.”
Bell looked at Marcus.
“What is she talking about?”
Marcus closed his eyes.
Then he sat down.
For the first time, Lena saw the man behind the coat.
He looked exhausted.
Not powerful.
Not wealthy.
Just tired.
“My daughter Emma wasn’t killed in an accident,” he said.
Lena stared at him.
Rachel closed her eyes.
Marcus continued.
“She died because someone changed her medication.”
Silence.
“The police called it an accidental overdose. The hospital agreed. The company lawyers agreed.”
“And you?” Bell asked.
“I didn’t.”
Marcus looked at the baby.
“I spent six years trying to prove it.”
Lena’s mind returned to the drawing.
The erased fourth figure.
Marcus had not been afraid of losing his fortune.
He had been afraid of losing another child.
But that still didn’t explain Noah.
Marcus looked at Rachel.
“She wanted to expose Daniel.”
Rachel nodded.
“I found evidence.”
“And I told you to wait.”
“You told me to trust you.”
“I thought I could protect you.”
“You put our son in danger.”
Marcus looked down.
“I know.”
Lena stepped between them.
“You used your own baby as bait.”
Marcus didn’t answer.
