Elena’s father retired.

Her mother became part of the foundation’s story.

The old mansion was converted into a shelter.

But Elena still had one problem.

Luca.

He refused to become CEO.

“I don’t want the title.”

“You own half the businesses.”

“Then sell them.”

“To whom?”

“People who know how to run them.”

She smiled.

“You hate being powerful.”

“No.”

“You hate being feared.”

“Yes.”

“What’s the difference?”

He looked at her.

“Power lets you change things.”

“Fear?”

“Fear lets you avoid changing.”

She kissed him.

“You’re learning.”

“So are you.”

They eventually married in a small ceremony.

No black-tie guests.

No mafia families.

No contracts.

Just friends.

Rose walked Elena down the aisle.

When the ceremony ended, Luca whispered:

“Worth it?”

She smiled.

“Every secret.”

He laughed.

“You’re impossible.”

“You knew that.”

Then they danced.

But later that night, Elena found a letter.

Not from her mother.

From the grandmother.

She opened it.

You think you won.

Elena read on.

But I left one thing behind.

A photograph.

A man standing beside Elena’s mother.

The man wasn’t anyone Elena recognized.

On the back:

Your mother’s first love.

Elena stared.

There was another line.

He is Rose’s real grandfather.

Elena went cold.

Luca saw her face.

“What?”

She handed him the photograph.

He stared.

“Who is he?”

“I don’t know.”

The name written beneath the photograph was:

Alexander Vale.

Luca frowned.

“Never heard of him.”

Elena whispered:

“My mother never mentioned him.”

Then Rose entered.

“Mom?”

They hid the photograph.

“What?”

“There’s a man outside.”

Luca stood.

“Who?”

Rose pointed toward the window.

A black car waited outside.

A man stepped out.

He looked directly at the house.

Elena’s heart pounded.

She recognized him.

Alexander Vale.
