Chapter 7

The wedding was canceled.

But the invitations had already gone out.

People expected scandal.

Instead, Luca announced something unexpected.

He was getting married.

Not to Vanessa.

To Elena.

The announcement shocked everyone.

Elena protested.

“It’s too soon.”

Luca laughed.

“We’ve known each other for years.”

“As employer and employee.”

“Not anymore.”

“You’re still impossible.”

“And you’re still stubborn.”

He proposed in the old ballroom.

The same room where she had warned him.

No cameras.

No family.

No business partners.

Only Rose and a few trusted friends.

Luca knelt.

“I don’t have a contract.”

She laughed.

“Good.”

“I don’t have a family arrangement.”

“Better.”

“I don’t have a business reason.”

“Perfect.”

He looked at her.

“I just have one question.”

“What?”

“Will you marry me?”

Elena cried.

“Yes.”

But before they could celebrate, the doors opened.

A man stepped inside.

Older.

Gray-haired.

Wearing a black coat.

Luca reached for his weapon.

Elena recognized him.

Her father.

No.

Not her father.

Someone else.

A man from the old photographs.

Luca’s father’s brother.

Richard.

Alive.

Everyone froze.

Richard smiled.

“You should have waited.”

Luca raised his gun.

“Waited for what?”

“For me to finish what your father started.”

Elena stared.

“What do you want?”

Richard looked at her.

“The trust.”

“What trust?”

“The one your mother hid.”

Luca stepped forward.

“It’s gone.”

Richard laughed.

“No.”

He held up a document.

“It’s in her name.”

He pointed at Elena.

Luca looked at her.

She stared at the paper.

A family trust.

Hidden assets.

Properties.

Offshore accounts.

And a clause:

The trust passes only to the daughter of Helena Delacroix.

Elena.

Her entire life had been built around something she never knew she owned.

Richard smiled.

“Now you understand.”

“No.”

Elena stepped forward.

“I understand one thing.”

“What?”

“My mother hid it because she didn’t want people like you to have it.”

Richard’s face hardened.

“So you’ll give it to the government?”

“No.”

She looked at Luca.

“We’ll decide.”

Richard laughed.

“You still don’t understand power.”

Elena replied:

“Neither did you.”

Luca moved beside her.

“You want the trust?”

Richard nodded.

“Then come get it.”

The lights went out.

Gunfire erupted.
