THE GIRL ETHAN COLE COULDN’T LEAVE BEHIND
CHAPTER 13
That night, everyone gathered around a fire outside the community center.
Someone brought guitars.
Someone cooked.
Children ran between the adults.
Lily sat beside Ethan with a blanket around her shoulders.
She looked at the fire.
“Dad?”
“Yeah?”
“Do you remember when you first met me?”
“Yes.”
“What did you think?”
Ethan smiled.
“I thought you were watching me.”
“I was.”
“Why?”
“You looked lonely.”
He stared at her.
“You thought I looked lonely?”
She nodded.
“You were.”
Ethan looked into the fire.
“Maybe I was.”
Lily rested her head against his shoulder.
“I wasn’t anymore after that.”
Ethan turned toward her.
“Neither was I.”
Around them, Greyhaven laughed.
The town had come to Willow Creek to help.
Again.
But this time, Ethan understood what the journey really meant.
Helping wasn’t always about fixing roofs.
Or carrying boxes.
Or repairing walls.
Sometimes helping meant staying.
Sometimes it meant listening.
Sometimes it meant sitting beside someone who believed they were forgotten and proving them wrong.
Ethan had spent much of his life believing that strength meant needing nobody.
Greyhaven had taught him otherwise.
And Lily had finished the lesson.
She had taught him that the strongest thing a person could do was open the door and let someone in.
The fire burned lower.
Lily grew sleepy.
Ethan pulled the blanket higher around her.
“You tired?”
“A little.”
“Sleep.”
She closed her eyes.
After a moment, she whispered,
“Dad?”
“Yeah?”
“I’m glad you came back.”
Ethan’s eyes closed.
“Me too.”
He looked around at the people surrounding them.
At the laughter.
The fire.
The mountains.
The little girl sleeping against him.
For the first time, Ethan understood that his life had not been leading him toward a place.
It had been leading him toward people.
