THE GIRL ETHAN COLE COULDN’T LEAVE BEHIND
CHAPTER 12
A year after their first trip to Willow Creek, Greyhaven returned for another volunteer weekend.
This time, Lily came with them.
The village had recovered.
The clinic had reopened fully.
The community center had fresh paint.
The damaged houses were repaired.
People remembered Greyhaven.
When Lily stepped out of the truck, an elderly woman recognized her.
“You’re Ethan’s girl.”
Lily smiled.
“Yeah.”
The woman hugged her.
Ethan watched from nearby.
He remembered the first time he had seen Lily through the orphanage window.
A lonely child watching strangers pass.
Now she was running through the village, greeting people she remembered.
Sarah approached Ethan.
“You changed her life.”
Ethan shook his head.
“She changed mine.”
Sarah smiled.
“That too.”
Later that afternoon, Ethan found Lily near the old children’s home.
The building looked different now.
It had been renovated.
Fresh windows.
New paint.
A small garden.
Lily stood quietly outside.
“You okay?”
She nodded.
“I was thinking.”
“About?”
“This used to be my home.”
Ethan stood beside her.
“It was.”
She looked at him.
“But now?”
He waited.
Lily smiled.
“Now I have a real one.”
Ethan looked away for a moment.
The emotion came too quickly.
Lily noticed.
“Are you crying?”
“No.”
“You are.”
“Wind.”
“There isn’t any wind.”
Ethan laughed.
“Then maybe I’m getting old.”
She hugged him.
He held her tightly.
Across the road, people from Greyhaven were unloading supplies.
Someone called Ethan’s name.
He looked toward them.
Then at Lily.
“Ready?”
She nodded.
“Let’s go.”
They walked back together.
Not ahead.
Not behind.
Together.
