THE GIRL ETHAN COLE COULDN’T LEAVE BEHIND

CHAPTER 11

The first real test came unexpectedly.

Lily became sick at school.

Nothing serious.

A fever.

But when the school called Ethan, he was thirty minutes away working near the harbor.

He dropped everything.

When he arrived, Lily was lying on the nurse’s cot.

She looked small.

Too small.

“Dad?”

Ethan stopped.

She had never called him that outside the house.

“I’m here.”

She reached for him.

He picked her up.

“I feel awful.”

“I know.”

“Are we going home?”

“Yeah.”

She rested her head against his shoulder.

“Good.”

At home, Ethan made soup.

Lily hated it.

He made toast.

She ate two bites.

He sat beside her bed all night.

At three in the morning, she woke.

“Dad?”

“Yeah?”

“Are you still here?”

Ethan looked at her.

“Yeah.”

“You didn’t leave.”

“No.”

She closed her eyes.

“Okay.”

He stayed until morning.

The next day, she was better.

But Ethan wasn’t.

He realized something while watching her sleep.

He had once believed love was something dangerous because it gave another person the power to hurt you.

Now he understood something else.

Love also gave you a reason to endure the fear.

That afternoon, Lily woke up hungry.

She walked into the kitchen.

Ethan was making pancakes.

She stood in the doorway.

“You stayed.”

“Of course.”

“Even though I was sick.”

“That’s what parents do.”

She smiled.

Then she climbed onto the chair.

“Can I have chocolate chips?”

Ethan looked at her.

“It’s nine in the morning.”

“That’s not a no.”

He laughed.

“No.”

She crossed her arms.

“Bad parent.”

“Eat your pancakes.”

She smiled.

And Ethan realized he had never been happier to be called anything.
