The Echoes of Obsidian Ridge

CHAPTER 4:

Julian walked along the wall of metal cabinets, running his fingers over the plastic labels. Names of prominent politicians, international diplomats, supreme court justices, and corporate titans were arranged alphabetically. Beneath each name sat a thick manila folder crammed with surveillance logs, wiretap transcripts, and black-and-white photographs.

He pulled out a folder marked VANCE, MARCUS – 1998. Julian froze, his thumb resting over his uncle’s name. “What is this place, Maya? Why would your father have a dossier on my uncle before Marcus even ran for the Senate?”

Maya opened a heavy ledger resting on the main console. Her eyes scanned the hand-written entries penned in her mother’s immaculate calligraphy. “It’s a master blackmail registry,” she whispered, her voice laced with horror. “Look at these red ink stamps across the top margins—NEUTRALIZED, COMPLIED, TERMINATED. My mother wasn’t just a cryptographer for local museums. She was decoding intercepted communications for a shadow network.”

Julian pulled out the tape marked Vance – Wiretap 04, placing it onto a nearby reel-to-reel deck. He hit play. The tape hissed with static before a smooth, recognizable voice filled the underground room.

“The funds have been redirected through the front company,” Senator Marcus Vance’s young voice spoke from the speakers. “If the Sterling family hesitates, remind them who owns the deed to their lives.”

Julian stepped back from the machine as if it had burned him. “My uncle… he wasn’t just a family benefactor. He was controlling them.”

“Not just controlling them,” Maya said, her eyes fixated on a solitary, un-stamped yellow file sitting on the desk under a gooseneck lamp. “He was holding something over their heads. Something so valuable they spent twenty-seven years hiding underground to protect it.”
