The Echoes of Obsidian Ridge
CHAPTER 14:
Through the wall of paralyzing noise, Maya moved with ruthless speed. Having covered her ears with high-grade acoustic dampening headphones taken from the bunker, she sprinted across the gravel, kicking a fallen carbine away from the head guard and securing a sidearm from his tactical holster.
She leveled the weapon directly at Marcus Vance, who was slumped against the transmitter housing, blood trickling from his ears as he tried desperately to block out the unbearable tone.
Julian hit the cut-off switch on the audio console. The deafening screech instantly ceased, leaving only the sound of howling wind and heavy rain.
“Turn off the transmitter feed…” Marcus gasped, rolling onto his side and looking up at Maya with unadulterated hatred.
“The feed isn’t playing noise anymore, Senator,” Maya said coldly, her hands perfectly steady on the grip of the pistol. “Julian just broadcast the entire decrypted ledger—every murder, every bribe, every wiretap transcript—across every public radio frequency and federal emergency channel from here to Washington.”
Down in the valley below, dozens of flashing red and blue lights began winding their way up the mountain pass road—a convoy of federal law enforcement vehicles responding to the automated emergency distress signal Julian had triggered twenty minutes earlier.
Arthur Sterling pulled himself up from the gravel, helping his wife Evelyn to her feet. He looked at Marcus with quiet pity. “You spent thirty years trying to control the narrative, Marcus. But truth isn’t something you can bury in a bunker.”
