The Billionaire Was Declared Brain Dead—But His Maid’s Crying Toddler Refused to Leave His Side
Chapter 4
That evening, Claire found a keyhole.
It was inside Adrian’s private study.
The room had been locked since the accident.
Marcus’s office had ordered all personal documents sealed.
But Claire knew the house better than almost anyone.
She also knew the tiny silver key around Adrian’s chain had a purpose.
She had spent the last five hours thinking about it.
At 11:20 p.m., she returned to the mansion.
Liam was asleep with the nanny.
Claire entered Adrian’s study using the emergency access code.
The room smelled like cedar and his cologne.
Everything was exactly as he had left it.
A half-finished cup of coffee.
A notebook.
A pen resting over an open page.
Claire walked to the large wall safe.
She tried the silver key.
Click.
The safe opened.
Inside was no money.
No jewelry.
Only a small black device and a sealed envelope.
Claire opened the envelope.
Her hands trembled.
Inside was one sentence.
If I am suddenly unable to speak, trust Claire Bennett before you trust anyone from Blackwell Holdings.
Claire stopped breathing.
Her name.
He had written her name.
Why?
She picked up the device.
It was a small encrypted recorder.
There was only one file.
She pressed play.
Adrian’s voice filled the room.
“If you’re hearing this, something has gone wrong.”
Claire’s eyes filled with tears.
“I’ve spent the last six months investigating financial transfers from three subsidiaries. Someone inside the company has been moving money through shell firms.”
The recording crackled.
“I don’t know how high it goes.”
Claire listened harder.
“There are people close to me I no longer trust.”
A pause.
“If I don’t make it home one night, don’t assume it was an accident.”
Claire covered her mouth.
The next words were quieter.
“There is one person I trust because she has never asked me for anything.”
Claire felt her chest tighten.
“You.”
The recording ended.
She sat frozen in the dark.
Adrian had trusted her.
But there was more.
At the bottom of the safe was a second envelope.
This one had Liam’s name on it.
Claire opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
Liam was sitting on Adrian’s shoulders in the backyard.
The picture had been taken three weeks earlier.
On the back, Adrian had written:
For the little man who finally made this house feel like a home.
Claire began crying.
She had spent years surviving.
Working.
Raising her son alone.
Never expecting anything from Adrian.
But now the man who had treated her with a quiet kindness was lying in a hospital bed while someone appeared eager to take control of everything he owned.
Claire returned to the recorder.
There was one final line she hadn’t understood the first time.
“Claire, if they call it an accident, look at the medical records before you believe them.”
She stared at the device.
Medical records.
Her mind raced.
The crash.
The brain-death declaration.
Marcus arriving immediately.
The severance paperwork.
The hidden message.
None of it felt separate anymore.
Claire picked up her phone.
She took a photograph of every document.
Then she whispered to the empty room:
“I won’t let them bury you while you’re still fighting.”
