The Billionaire Was Declared Brain Dead—But His Maid’s Crying Toddler Refused to Leave His Side
Chapter 6
The toxicology results came back six hours later.
The sedative concentration was far above what Claire had been told.
Dr. Parker stared at the number.
“That is not a normal therapeutic level.”
“Could someone have made a mistake?”
“Yes.”
Claire watched her.
“But you don’t think it was a mistake.”
Dr. Parker shook her head.
“Not when you combine it with the timing.”
Claire felt cold.
“The accident happened at 9:12.”
“The sedative was administered at 9:58.”
“After he arrived?”
“Yes.”
“Then someone gave it to him after the crash.”
“Correct.”
“And thirty-four minutes later, he was declared brain dead.”
Dr. Parker didn’t answer.
Claire understood.
Someone could have wanted Adrian to remain deeply unconscious while a diagnosis was made that would end all questions.
That afternoon, another problem appeared.
Hospital security reported that someone had accessed Adrian’s room overnight.
No family member.
No doctor.
No authorized employee.
The visitor identification system showed a blank entry.
Claire felt sick.
Marcus arrived again.
“You should go home,” he told her.
“Why?”
“You’ve been here too long.”
“Why are you so concerned about where I am?”
He stared at her.
Then his eyes moved to Liam.
“Because this isn’t safe for your child.”
Claire’s voice became quiet.
“Are you threatening me?”
“No.”
“Then why does it sound like one?”
Marcus stepped closer.
“I know about the financial difficulties you’ve had.”
Claire froze.
He knew about her past.
Her debts.
Her son’s father disappearing before Liam was born.
How?
Marcus continued.
“I could arrange a payment large enough to secure Liam’s future.”
“No.”
“You haven’t heard the number.”
“I don’t care.”
His expression hardened.
“Everyone has a price.”
“Not me.”
Marcus looked toward Adrian’s room.
“You don’t understand the world you’re standing in.”
“I understand enough.”
He leaned closer.
“Then understand this. Mr. Blackwell is not coming back.”
Claire’s anger exploded.
“Don’t say that.”
Marcus stepped away.
“Accept it.”
He left.
Claire waited until he disappeared.
Then she went directly to the hospital security office.
She asked to see the visitor log.
The officer refused at first.
Claire showed him a photograph of Adrian’s message.
“I think someone tried to hurt him.”
That changed everything.
Two hours later, security found footage.
At 2:13 a.m., a man entered the restricted ICU corridor.
His face was hidden beneath a medical mask.
But the uniform identification code belonged to a physician.
Dr. Howard.
Claire’s stomach dropped.
The doctor who had declared Adrian brain dead.
The same doctor who had administered the sedative.
And the same doctor whose name appeared on a private payment transfer in Adrian’s financial investigation.
Claire stared at the screen.
“This is not an accident.”
Dr. Parker nodded slowly.
“No.”
A new question appeared.
Who paid him?
And how high did the conspiracy go?
