The Billionaire Was Declared Brain Dead—But His Maid’s Crying Toddler Refused to Leave His Side
Chapter 10
The next morning, the hospital officially withdrew the brain-death declaration pending a full investigation.
News crews gathered outside.
The Blackwell estate became the center of a national business scandal.
But Claire didn’t care.
She cared about the man lying in room 614.
Dr. Hart explained that Adrian remained in a coma.
“He may wake gradually.”
“How long?”
“There is no reliable timeline.”
Claire nodded.
“I’ll wait.”
She sat beside him every day.
She brought Liam.
She talked to Adrian.
She read emails.
She complained about the weather.
She told him how Liam had learned to say “please.”
She told him that the garden at the mansion had grown wild.
She told him Marcus had terrible taste in ties.
And sometimes, she talked about herself.
“My father left when I was eleven.”
“You never knew that.”
“I don’t tell people.”
She looked at Adrian.
“But I think you’d understand.”
She swallowed.
“I’ve spent my whole life believing people leave.”
Silence.
“So when you were kind to me, I didn’t know what to do with it.”
Her voice broke.
“You made me feel safe.”
Liam crawled onto the chair.
Claire lifted him.
He rested his head near Adrian’s arm.
“Tell him,” Claire whispered.
The child babbled.
Then something unexpected happened.
Adrian’s eyelids moved.
Claire froze.
“Adrian?”
Nothing.
Dr. Hart ran in.
He examined him.
“Let’s not get excited yet.”
But the eyelids moved again.
Then Adrian’s breathing pattern changed.
His fingers curled.
Claire cried out.
“He’s trying.”
Dr. Hart smiled.
“Yes.”
Hours later, Adrian opened his eyes for the first time.
They were unfocused.
Confused.
Weak.
Claire leaned forward.
“Adrian?”
He looked at her.
His lips moved.
No sound came.
Claire cried.
“I’m here.”
His eyes shifted.
They found Liam.
The toddler leaned over and grabbed his finger.
“Da-da.”
Adrian’s eyes filled with tears.
A single tear rolled toward his ear.
Dr. Hart looked stunned.
“He recognizes you.”
Claire laughed through sobs.
“I knew he would.”
Adrian closed his eyes again.
The awakening had begun.
But before he drifted back into sleep, he squeezed Liam’s hand.
This time, everyone saw it.
It was no reflex.
It was a response.
And on the same day, investigators arrested Dr. Howard.
He confessed before midnight.
Marcus had paid him to keep Adrian heavily sedated long enough for the board to transfer control.
But there was one more revelation.
The crash itself had been planned.
