Claire did not tell anyone about Adrian’s feelings.

The evidence mattered more than romance.
The investigator helped transfer the files to a secure system.

They needed Adrian alive long enough to testify.
Dr. Parker decided to bring in a specialist.
Dr. Samuel Hart.
He was known for treating severe coma patients and had not been involved in Adrian’s original diagnosis.
After examining the records, he said something that gave Claire hope.
“I cannot call him brain dead based on the available evidence.”
Claire gripped the chair.
“What can you call him?”
“An extremely severe coma with unresolved toxicological complications.”
“So there is a chance?”
“There is a possibility.”
Claire closed her eyes.
“That is enough.”
Dr. Hart added another complication.
“Even if he regains consciousness, we have no idea how much neurological damage occurred.”
Claire nodded.
“I’ll take whatever chance we have.”
That night, she sat beside Adrian alone.
Liam slept on her lap.
Claire held Adrian’s hand.
“You idiot,” she whispered.
There was no response.
“You should have told me.”
Silence.
“You should have asked me to stay.”
Still nothing.
She laughed through tears.
“I probably would have said yes.”
Liam stirred.
Claire looked down.
The toddler’s eyes opened.
He looked at Adrian.
Then he reached out.
“Da-da.”
Claire gently placed his hand on Adrian’s.
A tear slid down her cheek.
“You love him too?”
Liam smiled.
Then Adrian’s monitor changed.
A sudden spike.
Dr. Hart came rushing into the room.
“Don’t move.”
Claire froze.
He watched the screen.
“Again.”
Liam squeezed Adrian’s finger.
The heart rate increased.
Dr. Hart looked at the EEG.
“There.”
“What?”
“There’s activity.”
Claire’s heart stopped.
“Brain activity?”
“Small.”
“But real?”
“Yes.”
Dr. Hart ordered a new scan.
The result showed something no previous examination had properly documented.
Adrian’s brain had localized electrical activity in regions associated with auditory processing.
He might not understand everything.
He might not wake soon.
But he was not neurologically silent.
The diagnosis of brain death was now officially questioned.
The hospital began an emergency review.
Marcus arrived within the hour.
He didn’t look surprised.
He looked furious.
That was when Claire knew.
They had been right.
Marcus wasn’t afraid of Adrian dying.
