The Billionaire Left the Same $10 Tip Every Morning… Until She Finally Asked Why

Chapter 9

Daniel and Martin traveled across town that night.

The old apartment building had been renovated.

But one storage room remained untouched.

Behind a loose panel, they found a metal box.

Inside was the ledger.

Names.

Dates.

Payments.

Signatures.

And one final page.

Daniel read it twice.

Then again.

His father’s handwriting was unmistakable.

If anything happens to me, Daniel must never trust Richard Voss.

Daniel closed the book.

His hands were shaking.

“He knew.”

Martin nodded.

“He knew they were stealing.”

“Why didn’t he tell me?”

“You were seventeen.”

Daniel stared at the page.

“He wanted to protect me.”

“Probably.”

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“He protected me so well I spent twenty years believing he died for no reason.”

Martin placed a hand on his shoulder.

“Now you know.”

But knowing didn’t make it easier.

When Daniel returned to the café, Clara was waiting.

“You found it.”

He nodded.

She didn’t ask for details.

She simply hugged him.

Daniel held her tightly.

For twenty years, he had carried anger toward his father.

Now that anger was changing.

It was becoming grief.

And underneath the grief was something else.

Love.

A love he had never fully understood until now.

“He wasn’t disappointed in me,” Daniel whispered.

“No.”

“I thought he was.”

Clara pulled back.

“He left you a message.”

Daniel nodded.

“He did.”

“What did it say?”

Daniel looked at the old photograph.

“He wanted me to remember where I came from.”

Clara smiled.

“And you did.”

Daniel looked at her.

“No.”

He touched her hand.

“I remembered because of you.”
