The Billionaire Left the Same $10 Tip Every Morning… Until She Finally Asked Why
Chapter 14
On the twentieth anniversary of his father’s death, Daniel returned to the café alone.
The corner booth was empty.
He sat down.
For a while, he said nothing.
The server brought coffee.
Daniel placed ten dollars beside the cup.
He stared at it.
Then Clara entered.
She had known where he would be.
She sat opposite him.
“You came.”
“I said I would.”
Daniel looked at the bill.
“I haven’t done this in a long time.”
Clara smiled.
“Maybe today is different.”
He nodded.
They sat quietly.
Then Daniel finally spoke.
“I used to think I owed him success.”
Clara listened.
“Then I thought I owed him money.”
He looked at the ten-dollar bill.
“Then I realized I owed him neither.”
“What did you owe him?”
Daniel smiled.
“To live the life he wanted me to have.”
Clara reached across the table.
“And are you?”
Daniel looked around.
At the café.
At the photograph in his wallet.
At Clara.
“Yes.”
He folded the ten-dollar bill.
But this time, he didn’t leave it behind.
He gave it to the server.
“Keep it.”
The server smiled.
Daniel stood.
He had finally finished the ritual.
Not because the memory mattered less.
Because it no longer needed a ritual to survive.
