The Billionaire in the Orange Vest

Chapter 7

Clara had spent twenty years believing her mother had died in a car accident.

The photograph showed her alive.

Standing inside St. Anne’s.

Beside two men who had controlled the hospital for decades.

Adrian looked at Clara.

“Are you sure?”

“That’s her.”

Her voice shook.

“Why would she be here?”

They searched the archive.

A file carried her mother’s name.

Inside was a personnel record.

She had worked at St. Anne’s for seven years.

Not as a nurse.

As an internal auditor.

Clara stared at the papers.

“My mother was an accountant.”

“I know.”

“You knew?”

“No.”

She kept reading.

Her mother had discovered the same fraud they were investigating.

She had tried to expose it.

Then she disappeared.

The official explanation had been a fatal accident.

But the records told another story.

She had resigned three weeks before her death.

The resignation letter was forged.

Clara sat down.

“She knew.”

Adrian nodded.

“She knew everything.”

A note had been attached to the file.

If Clara ever comes here, don’t let her see this.

Clara looked up.

“Why would someone write my name?”

Adrian didn’t answer.

A sound came from the hallway.

Someone had entered Archive Zero.

They turned.

Martin Cole stood there.

But he wasn’t alone.

An older woman stood beside him.

Clara recognized her face from the photograph.

She was in her late sixties now.

Clara’s mother.

Clara couldn’t breathe.

“Mom?”

The woman looked at her.

Tears filled her eyes.

“I knew you’d find it.”

Clara took a step forward.

“You died.”

“I had to disappear.”

“Why?”

“Because they threatened you.”

Clara stared at her.

“You let me believe you were dead.”

“I thought it was the only way to keep you safe.”

Martin stepped forward.

“Your mother helped build the system.”

Clara turned.

Her mother closed her eyes.

“It’s true.”

Adrian looked stunned.

“Why?”

“I was young,” she said. “I believed I could fix it from inside.”

“But you didn’t.”

“No.”

Her voice broke.

“I became part of it.”

She explained.

The hospital had created a hidden financial network.

Her job was to make the numbers appear legitimate.

She eventually discovered the system was being used to steal from patients.

She tried to expose it.

That’s when Martin’s father threatened her.

She staged her disappearance with help from an investigator.

But she never stopped collecting evidence.

The archive was her final record.

“Why did you wait so long?”

Clara asked.

Her mother looked at her.

“Because every time I thought the network was dying, someone rebuilt it.”

Adrian understood.

“Martin.”

Martin smiled.

“And your father before me.”

Clara looked at him.

“You continued it.”

“Of course.”

“Why?”

“Because it works.”

He gestured toward the archive.

“Everyone thinks hospitals are about medicine. They’re businesses. People trust them when they’re vulnerable.”

Clara stepped forward.

“You’re sick.”

Martin laughed.

“No. I’m realistic.”

Then the lights went out.

Someone had cut the power.

When the emergency lights came on, Martin was gone.

So was the ledger.

But Clara’s mother remained.

And she handed Adrian a small envelope.

“That isn’t the evidence you need.”

Adrian opened it.

Inside was a key.

“Then what is?”

Her mother looked toward the floor.

“The truth is underneath the hospital.”
