The Billionaire in the Orange Vest

Chapter 10

Adrian spent the entire night reading his father’s documents.

The story was more complicated than anyone expected.

His father had discovered the hospital fraud years before.

He had tried to dismantle it.

But by then, too many powerful people depended on the system.

He couldn’t destroy it openly without causing the hospital to collapse.

So he began creating an exit plan.

The secret foundation.

The protected funds.

The hidden archive.

The records.

And Clara’s account.

He had intended to give the evidence to an investigator.

But he died before he could.

Clara’s mother had taken over the plan.

Then disappeared.

For years, the evidence remained buried.

Until Adrian bought the hospital.

“Why did you never tell me?” Adrian asked Clara’s mother.

“Because I didn’t trust your family.”

“You trusted me enough to put money in Clara’s name.”

“Because your father trusted me.”

Adrian looked down.

He had spent his life believing his father had been a brilliant businessman.

He had never imagined the man had been quietly trying to correct his own mistakes.

The next morning, Adrian held a press conference.

He could have protected his company.

He could have blamed his predecessors.

Instead, he told the truth.

He acknowledged that his family had benefited from a system they should have challenged years earlier.

The admission shocked the business world.

ValeCare’s stock dropped.

Several executives resigned.

But patients began receiving refunds.

Employees who had been threatened began speaking.

The hospital opened its records.

The investigation expanded.

Martin Cole was eventually arrested.

So were several former executives.

But Martin still refused to reveal who had ordered the destruction of the original archive.

Then Clara found something.

A handwritten note inside her mother’s old accounting book.

The person at the top never signs anything.

She read it again.

Then she noticed the initials beneath it.

E.P.

She searched the old records.

Eleanor Pierce.

Former chairwoman of the hospital foundation.

She had died fifteen years earlier.

But her son was still alive.

Daniel Pierce.

He was now a respected government health adviser.

Adrian stared at the name.

“He’s been advising hospitals for years.”

Clara nodded.

“And he was on the foundation board when your father signed the transfer.”

They investigated.

Daniel had access to the same network.

He had approved policies.

He had relationships with the shell companies.

And more importantly, he had been the person who recommended Martin Cole for his position.

They found him at a charity event.

Adrian approached.

“Daniel.”

Daniel smiled.

“Adrian Vale.”

“You knew my father.”

“Of course.”

“You knew what happened at St. Anne’s.”

Daniel’s smile disappeared.

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.”

Clara stepped forward.

“We have the records.”

Daniel looked at her.

Then he said something unexpected.

“Your mother told you too much.”

Clara froze.

“You know my mother?”

Daniel smiled.

“She should have stayed hidden.”

Security moved toward them.

Daniel walked away.

But before he disappeared into the crowd, he turned.

“Ask your mother who really caused the accident.”

Clara’s heart dropped.

Her mother had told her she disappeared.

Martin said he didn’t know.

Daniel claimed otherwise.

The past still had one secret left.

And this time, it was personal.
