The Billionaire in the Orange Vest

Chapter 6

The door opened.

Martin Cole stepped inside.

He stopped when he saw Adrian and Clara.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Martin smiled.

“I wondered when you’d find this.”

Adrian stepped forward.

“You knew.”

“Of course.”

“How long?”

“Long enough.”

Clara looked at the ledger.

“People were stealing from patients.”

Martin shrugged.

“People steal everywhere.”

“Not like this.”

“You’re emotional.”

Clara stared at him.

“You’re talking about sick people.”

“I’m talking about business.”

Adrian’s voice became cold.

“This isn’t business.”

Martin laughed.

“You think you can walk into this place wearing an expensive suit and fix forty years of corruption?”

Adrian glanced at the ledger.

“No.”

He looked at Clara.

“But maybe we can start.”

Martin reached into his pocket.

Clara stepped back.

Adrian raised a hand.

Martin pulled out a phone.

“Relax.”

He showed them a photograph.

Noah.

Clara’s younger brother.

Leaving university.

Her face went pale.

“Where did you get that?”

Martin smiled.

“People with money can find almost anything.”

Adrian stepped between them.

“Leave her brother out of this.”

Martin looked at him.

“Then leave the basement alone.”

He turned to leave.

Adrian grabbed his arm.

Martin froze.

“Don’t threaten my employees.”

Martin looked at Clara.

“She isn’t your employee.”

“Not yet.”

The words surprised Clara.

Adrian released him.

Martin left.

Clara stared at Adrian.

“What did you mean?”

“I meant that you’re important to this investigation.”

“Don’t make promises.”

“I wasn’t.”

Later that night, Adrian arranged discreet security for Noah.

Clara objected.

“I can handle my family.”

“I know.”

“Then don’t make decisions for me.”

“You’re right.”

He stepped back.

“I’m learning.”

She looked at him.

“Learning what?”

“That protecting someone doesn’t mean controlling them.”

Clara nodded.

“Good.”

The next morning, Martin disappeared.

His office was empty.

His phone was off.

His car was abandoned.

The police began searching.

Then Adrian received an email.

You found the basement.

Now find the foundation.

Attached was a photograph of the hospital’s original architectural plans.

One section had been blacked out.

Clara studied it.

“What’s beneath the foundation?”

“I don’t know.”

She pointed at the plans.

“There.”

A tiny handwritten mark appeared beside the old east wing.

Room 0.

Adrian frowned.

“There is no Room 0.”

“Exactly.”

That afternoon, they found a sealed staircase behind a maintenance wall.

It descended beneath the basement.

At the bottom was a steel door.

On it was an old brass plate.

ARCHIVE ZERO.

Adrian inserted the key from his father’s old documents.

The door opened.

Inside were no patient files.

No money.

No contracts.

Only photographs.

Hundreds of them.

Every hospital director.

Every major donor.

Every politician connected to St. Anne’s.

And in the center of the room was a photograph of Adrian’s father.

Standing beside him was Martin Cole’s father.

But there was a third person.

A woman.

Clara recognized her immediately.

“That’s impossible.”

Adrian looked at her.

“Who is she?”

Clara whispered:

“My mother.”
