He was alive.
Living under a false identity in a rehabilitation facility.
His injuries had been serious.
His recovery had taken months.

When Claire walked into the room, he stared at her.
Then he saw the baby.
His face collapsed.
“Claire.”
She began crying.
“You’re alive.”
Daniel nodded.
“I couldn’t come back.”
“Why?”
“Because they were watching everyone connected to me.”
He looked at Ethan.
“And you found her.”
Ethan smiled faintly.
“She found me.”
Daniel smiled.
“That’s how she works.”
Claire stared.
“You knew Ethan?”
“Only by reputation.”
“Why did you mention him in the letter?”
Daniel looked at Ethan.
“Because he had walked away from Westbrook.”
Ethan frowned.
“How did you know?”
“I knew you were investigating the company.”
“Why me?”
Daniel answered simply.
“Because you walked away when everyone else wanted money.”
Ethan understood.
Daniel had been watching him.
Not closely.
Just enough.
“Who tried to kill you?”
Daniel looked toward the window.
“I don’t know exactly.”
“Someone from the company?”
“Yes.”
“But who?”
Daniel reached for the blue file.
“The people involved are still there.”
He pointed to several names.
Executives.
Doctors.
Investors.
Board members.
One name stood out.
Charles Westbrook.
Daniel’s own brother.
Claire stared.
“No.”
Daniel nodded.
“He organized everything.”
Ethan looked at the file.
“Why fake your death?”
“To protect Claire.”
Daniel looked at the baby.
“And now?”
Claire asked.
“Now they know about Anna.”
Silence.
Ethan stepped closer.
“They said they don’t want the baby.”
Daniel looked at him.
“That’s worse.”
“Why?”
“Because they want the research.”
Ethan understood.
Anna had been used in early genetic studies.
The treatment’s success was connected to a rare genetic marker.
Anna carried it.
Charles didn’t want the baby herself.
He wanted what her blood could prove.
Claire immediately stepped back.
“No.”
Daniel nodded.
“They won’t hurt her if we stay ahead of them.”
Ethan spoke calmly.
“Then we stay ahead.”
Daniel looked at him.
“You’re willing to take this on?”
“Yes.”
“You don’t have to.”
Ethan glanced at Claire.
Then Anna.
“I know.”
Claire looked at him.
