The Billionaire Helped a Pregnant Stranger — Unaware She Would Become His Greatest Love
Chapter 6
Claire had hidden the file months earlier.
She had believed it had been destroyed.
But after receiving the messages, she realized someone had been searching for it all along.
“It wasn’t just a safety report,” she told Ethan.
“What was it?”
“Daniel discovered that the company had suppressed clinical results.”
“For what?”
“A treatment for a rare blood disorder.”
Ethan looked at her.
“Why suppress it?”
“Because the company was developing a more profitable version.”
“That’s unethical.”
“Yes.”
She explained that Daniel had planned to expose everything.
Then he died.
Or seemed to.
“Where is the file?”
“I don’t know.”
“You said blue.”
“Blue folder.”
“Where did Daniel keep his research?”
“At home.”
“His old house?”
“Yes.”
Ethan contacted a legal investigator.
The old Westbrook residence had been sold after Daniel’s supposed death.
But one property remained.
A small cabin outside the city.
Claire had forgotten about it.
They traveled there with security.
Inside, they found almost nothing.
Old books.
Furniture.
Dust.
Then Claire saw a small blue mark beneath a shelf.
She moved it.
A hidden compartment opened.
Inside was the blue file.
She lifted it carefully.
Ethan looked at the documents.
There were research papers.
Lab results.
Financial reports.
And a letter.
Addressed to Claire.
She opened it.
“Claire,
If you’re reading this, I failed to protect the truth.
Do not trust Westbrook executives.
The treatment works.
But someone wants it buried.
There is one person I trust.
His name is Ethan Cole.”
Claire looked up.
She stared at Ethan.
He was equally shocked.
“You knew Daniel?”
“No.”
She handed him the letter.
Ethan read it.
The date was nine months earlier.
Before Daniel’s accident.
“Why would he know my name?”
Claire shook her head.
“I don’t know.”
Ethan continued reading.
“You have built a reputation for protecting businesses that refuse corruption. If something happens to me, find Ethan Cole.”
He looked at Claire.
“That doesn’t make sense.”
“It does.”
“What?”
“Daniel had been investigating the same company you were planning to acquire.”
Ethan remembered the business deal.
He had been considering buying part of Westbrook Medical months earlier.
He had walked away because the numbers didn’t look right.
Now he understood.
Daniel had known about him.
He had left the documents for Ethan.
But there was another page.
A photograph.
Daniel.
Claire.
And a baby ultrasound.
The date was two weeks after the photograph.
Ethan stared.
“He knew about Anna.”
Claire nodded.
“He was the father.”
“Yes.”
The room became silent.
Then Ethan looked at the documents again.
“Someone is hiding more than a drug.”
Claire nodded.
“They’re hiding Daniel.”
