The Billionaire Helped a Pregnant Stranger — Unaware She Would Become His Greatest Love
Chapter 14
Twenty years after Ethan stopped beside the bus station, Claire was fifty-three.
Ethan was fifty-six.
Anna was twenty-three.
She had become a medical researcher.
Daniel was still part of the family.
The foundation had expanded internationally.
Ethan had retired from most of his business responsibilities.
Claire occasionally teased him about becoming “semi-retired.”
“You still work more than anyone I know.”
He smiled.
“That’s because I don’t know how to relax.”
“You’re learning.”
One evening, they returned to the old bus station.
It had been renovated.
The streetlamp was still there.
The bench had been replaced.
But the location was unchanged.
Claire stood beneath the light.
“This is it.”
Ethan smiled.
“Yes.”
“You were driving a black sedan.”
“Yes.”
“You asked if I was okay.”
“Yes.”
“I lied.”
“I know.”
She laughed.
“I thought you were suspicious.”
“I was.”
“Why did you stop?”
He looked at her.
“I don’t know.”
She smiled.
“Yes, you do.”
He thought for a moment.
“You looked like someone who had run out of choices.”
She touched his arm.
“And you gave me one.”
He shook his head.
“No.”
“What?”
“I gave you a ride.”
He looked at her.
“You gave yourself the chance.”
Claire smiled.
They stood together in silence.
Then Anna arrived.
She walked toward them with a smile.
“Family photo?”
Ethan laughed.
“Again?”
“Every year.”
Claire stood between them.
Anna raised the camera.
Behind them was the bus station.
The streetlamp.
The road.
The place where everything began.
The camera clicked.
Anna looked at the picture.
“Perfect.”
Ethan smiled.
Claire looked at him.
“You know what I think?”
“What?”
“Sometimes the most important decisions don’t feel important when you make them.”
He nodded.
“They just feel human.”
She took his hand.
“That night, you helped a pregnant stranger.”
“And she changed my life.”
Claire smiled.
“Then I guess we’re even.”
