The Billionaire CEO Slipped “HELP” on a Napkin—Then a Single Dad at Table 15 Saw It
Chapter 4
They spent the night in a motel outside the city.
Daniel chose it because it wasn’t connected to his name.
Victoria paid cash.
For the first time, Daniel saw how vulnerable a billionaire could actually be.
She sat on the edge of the bed staring at the floor.
“I’ve never been this afraid.”
Daniel stood near the window.
“You should have told me sooner.”
“I barely know you.”
“You trusted me enough to slip me a napkin.”
Victoria smiled faintly.
“I didn’t have many choices.”
Daniel turned toward her.
“Why me?”
She looked at him.
“What?”
“Out of everyone in that restaurant.”
Victoria was quiet.
Then she answered:
“Because you were the only person who looked at me.”
Daniel frowned.
“What does that mean?”
“Everyone else looked at me and saw Victoria Sterling.”
She looked down.
“You looked at me like I was just a person.”
Daniel didn’t know what to say.
Emma slept in the other room.
The silence between them was interrupted by a knock.
Daniel froze.
Victoria stood.
Another knock.
Three slow taps.
Daniel approached the door.
“Who is it?”
No answer.
He looked through the peephole.
Nobody.
He opened the door slightly.
An envelope lay on the floor.
Daniel picked it up.
Inside was a photograph.
Victoria’s brother.
Bound to a chair.
On the back:
Tomorrow. 8 A.M. Bring the CEO.
Victoria stared at the photograph.
“My God.”
Daniel looked at her.
“What’s his name?”
“Michael.”
“Do you know where they are holding him?”
“No.”
Daniel examined the photograph.
There was something behind Michael.
A wall.
A sign.
He zoomed in using his phone.
A partial logo appeared.
Daniel recognized it.
“The old Sterling warehouse.”
Victoria looked at him.
“That building was closed ten years ago.”
“Exactly.”
They decided to go.
At 7:30 the next morning, Daniel drove toward the warehouse.
Victoria sat beside him.
She looked nervous.
“Daniel.”
“What?”
“If something happens…”
“No.”
“You don’t understand.”
“I understand perfectly.”
“You have a daughter.”
“Exactly.”
Victoria looked at him.
Daniel continued.
“Which means I’m not letting some criminals decide what happens to families.”
They reached the warehouse.
The building was enormous.
Rust covered the walls.
The windows were broken.
Daniel parked behind a loading dock.
They entered through a side door.
Inside, they heard voices.
Victoria whispered:
“Michael.”
They followed the sound.
Then found him.
He was tied to a chair.
Victoria ran toward him.
“Michael!”
A man stepped from the shadows.
He was older.
Calm.
Expensively dressed.
Daniel recognized him.
Richard Hale.
Victoria’s chief financial officer.
The person she trusted most.
Richard smiled.
“Good morning.”
Victoria stared.
“You.”
Richard nodded.
“You found me.”
“You’ve been behind this.”
“Not alone.”
Richard gestured toward the warehouse.
Screens lit up.
Hundreds of financial records appeared.
Daniel stared.
The dormant subsidiary wasn’t simply moving money.
It was financing illegal operations across the country.
Richard looked at Victoria.
“You found the account.”
“Yes.”
“And now you know too much.”
Victoria stepped forward.
“You killed my employees.”
Richard smiled.
“I protected the company.”
Michael shouted:
“Victoria, don’t listen to him!”
Richard’s expression changed.
“Your brother has always been emotional.”
Daniel noticed something.
The security camera above them.
Its red light was blinking.
Someone else was watching.
Richard wasn’t acting alone.
Then the warehouse lights suddenly went out.
A gunshot echoed through the darkness.
