“Stop Calling This Number,” She Said—Then the Mafia Boss Whispered, “My Mother Is Dead.”

Chapter 8

Marco read the message again.

He looked at Clara.

“Don’t believe it.”

“How do I know?”

“You don’t.”

“That isn’t reassuring.”

He nodded.

“It shouldn’t be.”

Hayes laughed.

“You think you can trust him?”

Marco’s eyes stayed on Clara.

“No.”

Hayes smiled.

“Good.”

Then the lights went out.

A fight erupted.

Marco moved faster than Clara expected.

He struck Hayes’s wrist.

The gun fell.

Hayes ran.

Marco chased him.

Clara grabbed the phone and followed.

They reached the basement stairs.

Hayes disappeared through a side exit.

Marco stopped.

“Let him go.”

“Why?”

“Because he wants us to chase him.”

Clara stared.

“You think it’s a trap.”

“Yes.”

They returned to the safe.

Marco opened every file.

Then found one labeled:

FINAL LEDGER

Clara stood behind him.

“That’s it.”

Marco hesitated.

He remembered the message.

Don’t let Marco open the final file.

He looked at Clara.

“Do you trust me?”

“No.”

He almost smiled.

“Good.”

Then he opened it.

Inside was a ledger containing every major transaction connected to the Romano family.

Political payments.

Illegal property purchases.

Police bribes.

Judicial influence.

Mafia operations.

And one account labeled:

Bennett Protection Fund.

Clara stared.

“My mother had an account.”

Marco nodded.

“It looks like she was protected.”

“From whom?”

He followed the transfers.

The money came from Marco’s father.

Then from Evelyn.

Then from an unknown account.

The final beneficiary was Clara.

For twenty years, someone had been paying for her safety.

Clara began crying.

“My father?”

Marco shook his head.

“No.”

“Then who?”

They followed the account.

The owner name appeared.

Anthony Romano.

Clara stared.

“Why would he protect me?”

Marco looked confused.

“Maybe he wasn’t protecting you.”

“Then what?”

He opened another file.

It contained a photograph.

Anthony standing beside Clara’s father.

Her father was holding an infant.

Clara.

Marco’s expression changed.

“Your father knew Anthony.”

Clara shook her head.

“That can’t be.”

“Your mother said your father disappeared.”

“Because he was trying to save me.”

Marco nodded.

“He may have made a deal with Anthony.”

“What kind?”

Marco read the final page.

Then he whispered:

“He traded the ledger for your life.”

Clara stared at him.

“My father gave Anthony the ledger?”

“No.”

Marco looked at the page again.

“He gave him a copy.”

“And the real one?”

Marco looked at the phone.

“It was hidden in the one place Anthony couldn’t reach.”

“Where?”

He looked at Clara.

“Your mother’s phone number.”

Clara understood.

The number itself was part of the key.

Her mother had converted the phone line into a coded archive.

Messages.

Voicemails.

Numbers.

Dates.

Everything pointed to a hidden digital vault.

Marco smiled slightly.

“Your mother was smarter than all of them.”

Clara wiped her tears.

“How do we open it?”

“The final four numbers.”

“What numbers?”

He looked at the messages.

11-7-3-9.

Marco entered them.

The phone screen changed.

A video appeared.

Evelyn Romano.

Alive.

Older.

Her eyes were tired.

But she was smiling.

“Marco.”

His breath caught.

His mother looked directly at the camera.

“If you’re watching this, then Clara found you.”

Marco whispered:

“Mom.”

Evelyn continued.

“I’m sorry.”

She looked at the camera for a long time.

“You’ve been told I died.”

She took a breath.

“I let them believe it.”

Marco’s eyes filled with tears.

“I had to.”

Then the video froze.

A countdown appeared.

00:10

Clara stared.

“What is that?”

Marco looked at the screen.

“Get down.”

The building exploded.
