“Stop Calling This Number,” She Said—Then the Mafia Boss Whispered, “My Mother Is Dead.”

Chapter 12

Clara had uploaded the decoded medical records to a secure server.

She had done it before entering the courthouse.

The files had automatically been sent to federal investigators, journalists, and an independent watchdog group.

Hayes realized the game was over.

He pointed the gun at her.

“You have no idea what you’ve done.”

Clara shook.

“But I know what you did.”

Marco slowly stood.

The bullet had grazed his side.

Hayes looked shocked.

“You’re alive.”

“Unfortunately for you.”

Marco tackled him.

The gun flew across the courtroom.

Thomas’s chair fell.

Clara rushed to him.

“Dad?”

Thomas’s face crumpled.

“Clara.”

She hugged him.

He held her tightly.

“I thought you were dead,” she cried.

“I thought you were safer without me.”

“You should have told me.”

“I wanted to.”

He looked at her mother in his mind.

“She made me promise.”

Clara cried harder.

Across the room, Marco wrestled Hayes.

Federal agents stormed in.

Hayes was arrested.

The evidence spread through the city within hours.

Banks froze accounts.

Officials resigned.

Several police officers were arrested.

Properties were seized.

The network that had operated for twenty years began collapsing.

But Clara wasn’t thinking about any of that.

She sat beside her father in the hospital.

Marco sat in the hallway.

Evelyn was recovering in another room.

Thomas looked toward Marco.

“You protected my daughter.”

Marco nodded.

“She protected me too.”

Thomas smiled faintly.

Then he looked at Clara.

“I owe you the truth.”

“You already gave me the truth.”

“There is more.”

Clara frowned.

Her father reached into his coat.

He pulled out a letter.

It was from Margaret.

Clara recognized her handwriting immediately.

She opened it.

My darling Clara,

One day you will hate me for the secrets.

I hope you forgive me.

I never wanted your life to be built on fear.

I wanted it built on choice.

There was one man I trusted to protect you.

Not because he was powerful.

Because he understood loss.

Clara looked toward Marco.

Her mother continued:

“If he is beside you when you read this, don’t push him away.”

Clara laughed through tears.

The final line was simple.

He may be the first person who understands what it costs to stay.

Clara folded the letter.

Marco entered.

“Your father told me I could come in.”

She smiled.

“He did.”

Marco sat beside her.

“You okay?”

“No.”

“Me neither.”

They were silent.

Then Clara leaned against him.

Marco stiffened slightly.

“You don’t have to.”

“I know.”

She looked up.

“I want to.”

He wrapped an arm around her.

For the first time, neither of them was running.

Not from the past.

Not from their families.

Not from the truth.

Then Evelyn appeared in the doorway.

She smiled.

“I always wondered what would happen when those two finally met.”

Clara laughed.

Marco looked at her.

“You knew?”

Evelyn smiled.

“Your mothers planned this.”

“What?”

“They believed if either of you survived, you would find each other.”

Marco shook his head.

“You’re serious.”

“Very.”

Clara looked at him.

“That is terrifying.”

Marco smiled.

“For once, I agree.”
