“Stop Calling This Number,” She Said—Then the Mafia Boss Whispered, “My Mother Is Dead.”

Chapter 10

Clara could barely breathe.

“My father is alive?”

Evelyn nodded.

“He has been alive for twenty years.”

“Where?”

“We don’t know exactly.”

Marco stared at his mother.

“You said Hayes took him.”

“He found him last month.”

“Why?”

“To force him to reveal the original ledger.”

Clara felt dizzy.

“My father has it?”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn’t he come for me?”

“Because he believed coming near you would get you killed.”

Clara sat down.

Her whole childhood had been built around a lie.

She had grown up believing her father left.

Believing he chose another life.

Now she learned he had disappeared to protect her.

Marco sat beside her.

“I know what you’re feeling.”

“How?”

“Because I spent three years believing my mother was dead.”

Clara looked at him.

“And now?”

“Now I’m angry she survived without me.”

Evelyn looked at them.

“You have more in common than you realize.”

They found a hidden room beneath the chapel.

Inside were maps.

Photographs.

Old communication logs.

One location appeared repeatedly.

A rehabilitation facility near the northern border.

Evelyn said:

“That’s where Hayes took him.”

Marco stood.

“We’re going.”

Evelyn shook her head.

“You can’t just walk in.”

“I wasn’t planning to.”

He looked at Clara.

“You stay here.”

“No.”

“Clara.”

“I’ve spent my entire life being protected from the truth.”

She stepped closer.

“I’m done.”

Marco stared at her.

Then nodded.

“Fine.”

They left with a small team.

The facility was heavily guarded.

But Marco’s people had information.

They found a service entrance.

Inside, they discovered abandoned rooms.

No staff.

No patients.

Hayes had moved everyone.

Again.

But one room contained a chair.

Blood on the floor.

And a message carved into the wall.

THE GIRL HAS THE KEY.

Clara stared.

“What key?”

Marco looked around.

Then at her necklace.

She touched it.

It was a simple silver pendant her mother had given her when she was ten.

“You think—”

Marco nodded.

“Take it off.”

She did.

Inside the pendant was a tiny memory chip.

Clara stared.

“My mother hid this?”

Evelyn had been right.

The key was not a number.

It was Clara herself.

They inserted the chip into a laptop.

A video opened.

Margaret appeared.

Clara began crying immediately.

Her mother looked directly at her.

“My little girl.”

The recording continued.

“If you found this, then you’re finally old enough to know the truth.”

She explained everything.

Her relationship with Evelyn.

The women they saved.

The betrayal.

Her husband’s disappearance.

And the secret ledger.

But the biggest revelation came at the end.

“The ledger isn’t a book.”

Clara looked at Marco.

Her mother’s voice continued:

“It is a list of names encoded into children’s medical records.”

Marco frowned.

“Why?”

“Because nobody investigates children’s files.”

Clara’s heart raced.

Her own medical records.

Her childhood hospital file.

The files held by her pediatrician.

The information had been hidden there for twenty years.

Margaret’s voice ended with:

“Clara, trust the man who stayed when everyone else told you to run.”

The screen went black.

Marco stared at her.

She stared back.

Neither spoke.

Then Marco quietly said:

“I think she meant me.”

Clara whispered:

“I think she did too.”
