Single Dad Lost His VIP Seat to a Wealthy Passenger—5 Minutes Later, Everyone Was Evicted

Chapter 9

The next morning, Evelyn brought in a specialized investigative team.

The flash drive was encrypted.

It took several hours to access.

When they finally opened it, the files contained hundreds of documents.

Contracts.

Bank records.

Photographs.

Maps.

Names.

Daniel watched from behind the investigators.

Then a map appeared on the screen.

It showed the airport.

But not the terminal.

The underground service tunnels.

Daniel recognized one section.

The old cargo facility.

“What’s that?”

Evelyn pointed.

“An abandoned logistics area.”

“Why would Harrington care about it?”

“Maybe because nobody checks it.”

The investigators found records showing that Harrington Holdings had leased several underground spaces through shell companies.

For years.

Daniel felt uneasy.

“What were they storing?”

“We don’t know.”

They needed access.

That afternoon, federal agents secured the old facility.

Daniel was not supposed to go.

But when he saw the map, he recognized something.

A construction mark.

“Wait.”

Everyone stopped.

Daniel pointed.

“That wall.”

“What about it?”

“I built part of that.”

Evelyn looked at him.

“When?”

“Six years ago.”

“Why?”

“The airport expanded the cargo terminal.”

Daniel studied the map.

“There’s a service corridor behind it.”

The agents opened the wall.

Behind it was a narrow passage.

They entered.

The corridor led to an underground room.

Inside were filing cabinets.

Computers.

Hard drives.

Boxes.

Everything had been hidden for years.

An investigator opened one box.

Inside were contracts.

Another contained passports.

Another contained bank records.

Then Daniel saw something that made him stop.

A photograph.

Richard Harrington.

James Whitmore.

And several other men.

Standing together.

Daniel knew two of them personally.

One was a former city official.

The other was a banker who had approved several loans for Carter Construction.

Daniel stared.

“How long has this been happening?”

Evelyn looked at the evidence.

“At least fifteen years.”

Daniel felt sick.

The operation was much larger than Harrington.

It involved banks.

Government officials.

Construction companies.

Transportation firms.

Possibly even law enforcement.

Then they found a ledger.

The ledger contained coded payments.

Beside each payment was a letter.

Evelyn began matching names.

One name after another.

Then she stopped.

“What?”

Daniel asked.

She pointed.

“Your wife’s name.”

Daniel’s face went pale.

“What?”

Her name appeared beside a date.

The date of her death.

Daniel’s entire body froze.

“No.”

Evelyn looked at him.

“Daniel—”

“No.”

He grabbed the ledger.

There it was.

His wife’s name.

A payment.

A code.

And a number.

Daniel stared at it.

“She was killed?”

“We don’t know.”

“But this says—”

“We need to investigate.”

Daniel couldn’t breathe.

His wife had died five years earlier in what everyone believed was a tragic accident.

A rainy night.

A highway.

A collision.

He had spent five years believing he had lost her to fate.

Now her name was sitting inside a secret financial ledger connected to Richard Harrington.

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

“Tell me she wasn’t part of this.”

Evelyn shook her head.

“We don’t know.”

“Then find out.”

“We will.”

Daniel’s voice broke.

“Find out.”

He walked away.

For the first time since the investigation began, the case was no longer about his company.

It was personal.

Someone had possibly taken his wife from him.

And if that was true, Daniel wasn’t going to stop until he knew why.
