Richard Harrington walked away from Daniel with an expression that suggested the matter was already settled.
Daniel watched him speak quietly with the flight attendant.
Noah tugged on his sleeve.
“Dad?”
“Yeah?”
“Did we do something wrong?”
Daniel immediately shook his head.
“No.”
“Then why does that man want our seats?”
“Because he thinks he can have whatever he wants.”
Noah looked toward Richard.
“Is he famous?”
“Maybe.”
“Are you famous?”
Daniel smiled.
“No.”
“Then why didn’t you let him have it?”
“Because it was ours.”
Noah nodded.
That answer seemed to satisfy him.
But the situation wasn’t over.
A few minutes later, a senior airline employee approached Daniel.
“Mr. Carter?”
“Yes.”
“My name is Melissa. I’m the gate supervisor.”
Daniel nodded.
“I understand there’s been a misunderstanding.”
“No misunderstanding.”
Melissa lowered her voice.
“Mr. Harrington is one of our most important corporate clients.”
Daniel looked at her.
“Congratulations.”
She didn’t smile.
“He travels with us frequently.”
“Good for him.”
“We’d appreciate it if you would move to another seat.”
Daniel looked toward the back of the plane.
“Where?”
“Economy.”
Daniel stared.
“So I paid for a ticket, got upgraded, received a boarding pass, sat in my assigned seat, and now I’m supposed to move because someone richer wants it?”
Melissa looked uncomfortable.
“I’m simply asking you to be reasonable.”
Daniel glanced at Noah.
The boy was beginning to look nervous.
“No.”
Melissa blinked.
“No?”
“I’m not moving.”
Her expression changed.
“You understand this could delay the flight.”
Daniel nodded.
“Then perhaps the person who caused the problem should solve it.”
A few passengers quietly laughed.
Richard heard them.
He turned around.
“This is ridiculous.”
Daniel looked at him.
“I agree.”
Richard approached.
“I offered you money.”
“And I declined.”
“You have a child.”
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“Yes.”
“Then act like a responsible father.”
The words changed the atmosphere immediately.
Daniel stood.
“Don’t talk about my son.”
Richard stared at him.
“I’m trying to help you.”
“No. You’re trying to get what you want.”
Richard looked at Melissa.
“Remove him.”
Melissa froze.
“Sir?”
“Remove him from the flight.”
Daniel looked at her.
“On what grounds?”
Richard answered:
“He’s being disruptive.”
Daniel almost laughed.
“I’ve been sitting here.”
“You refused a crew instruction.”
Daniel shook his head.
“You aren’t crew.”
Richard’s face reddened.
Melissa stepped between them.
“Everyone needs to calm down.”
Then another airline employee hurried toward her.
He whispered something in her ear.
Melissa’s face changed.
She looked shocked.
“Are you sure?”
The employee nodded.
She immediately stepped away and made a phone call.
Daniel couldn’t hear what she said.
Richard looked impatient.
“What is happening?”
Melissa ignored him.
She listened to the person on the phone.
Then she turned toward Daniel.
“Mr. Carter.”
“Yes?”
“Could you please remain seated?”
Daniel frowned.
“I am.”
“Thank you.”
Richard looked confused.
“What about him?”
Melissa didn’t answer.
Instead, she approached another employee.
The boarding door was still open.
People were beginning to whisper.
Then the captain appeared.
He looked unusually serious.
“What’s going on?”
Melissa spoke quickly.
The captain listened.
His eyes moved toward Daniel.
Then toward Richard.
He looked at Daniel again.
“Mr. Carter?”
“Yes?”
“Would you mind showing me your identification?”
Daniel hesitated.
“Why?”
“Please.”
Daniel handed it over.
The captain examined it.
His expression changed.
Richard noticed.
“What?”
The captain didn’t answer him.
He walked back toward the cockpit.
Richard looked irritated.
“What is going on?”
No one responded.
Exactly five minutes had passed since Richard first demanded Daniel’s seat.
Then the captain made an announcement.
“Ladies and gentlemen, please remain seated.”
The cabin became silent.
“Due to an unexpected operational issue, this aircraft will not be departing.”
A collective groan spread through the cabin.
Richard immediately stood.
“What?”
The captain continued.
“All passengers will be asked to leave the aircraft.”
People began talking loudly.
Daniel looked at Noah.
“What does that mean?”
“I don’t know.”
Passengers began gathering their belongings.
Richard walked toward the front.
“You can’t be serious.”
The captain looked at him.
“I’m completely serious.”
“Do you know how important I am?”
The captain’s voice remained calm.
“That isn’t relevant.”
Richard stared at him.
For the first time since boarding, he looked uncertain.
The passengers were escorted off the plane.
But nobody understood why.
Until an airline security officer approached Daniel.
“Mr. Carter, could you come with me?”
Daniel’s stomach tightened.
“Why?”
The officer looked at him.
“Because the airline needs to speak with you.”
Noah grabbed his father’s hand.
“Am I coming?”
“Yes.”
The officer nodded.
“Your son stays with you.”
As Daniel walked toward the terminal, he glanced back.
Richard Harrington stood near the aircraft door.
His expensive suit was still perfect.
His confidence was gone.
And nobody had yet explained why an entire plane had been evacuated because of one ordinary father.
