Single Dad Lost His VIP Seat to a Wealthy Passenger—5 Minutes Later, Everyone Was Evicted

Chapter 10

Daniel spent the next two days refusing to sleep.

He requested every document related to his wife’s accident.

The official report.

The police photographs.

Insurance records.

Medical records.

Everything.

Most of it was exactly as he remembered.

Rain.

Poor visibility.

A wet road.

A truck that had crossed the center line.

But one detail was different.

The truck’s owner.

Daniel had never known the company.

It was a small transportation firm.

Northbridge Logistics.

Daniel stared at the name.

Northbridge.

The same name as the company James had wanted him to transfer his warehouse to.

He called Evelyn.

“You found something?”

“Maybe.”

“What?”

“The truck that hit my wife’s car.”

“What about it?”

“Who owned it?”

There was silence.

Then Evelyn said:

“Northbridge Logistics.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

He felt the room spinning.

“That’s not possible.”

“We’re checking it.”

“Check faster.”

Hours later, Evelyn returned.

“The company was controlled by a holding firm.”

“Which one?”

“Northbridge Holdings.”

Daniel whispered:

“Harrington.”

“Yes.”

Daniel sat down.

The truth was becoming impossible to ignore.

His wife had been killed in an accident involving a company connected to Harrington.

But that still didn’t prove murder.

They needed evidence.

Then investigators found something.

A payment had been made to the truck driver three days before the accident.

Another payment was made two days afterward.

The driver disappeared shortly afterward.

He had never been found.

Daniel stared at the records.

“Where is he?”

“Unknown.”

“Find him.”

They searched.

Eventually, they found a lead.

The driver was living under another name in Arizona.

Federal agents located him.

Daniel wasn’t allowed to meet him.

But Evelyn did.

When she returned, her expression was grim.

“He admitted it.”

Daniel stood.

“What did he admit?”

“He was paid to cause the crash.”

Daniel’s legs nearly gave out.

“Who paid him?”

“He doesn’t know the entire chain.”

“Who gave him the money?”

“A man named James Whitmore.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

James.

The same man who had worked beside him.

The same man who had attended his wife’s funeral.

The same man who had watched Daniel raise Noah alone.

Daniel felt anger unlike anything he had ever experienced.

“Why?”

“We don’t know.”

“Find him.”

“We’re trying.”

Then the driver revealed something else.

Daniel’s wife had discovered the financial scheme months before her death.

She had found irregularities in one of Carter Construction’s accounts.

She had planned to confront James.

But she never got the chance.

Daniel sat in silence.

For five years, he had blamed himself.

He had thought maybe he should have been driving that night.

Maybe he could have protected her.

Maybe he could have done something.

Now he knew.

The accident hadn’t been his fault.

It had never been his fault.

Someone had taken her because she knew too much.

That night, Daniel went to Noah’s room.

His son was asleep.

Daniel sat beside him.

He whispered:

“I’m sorry.”

Noah opened his eyes.

“Dad?”

Daniel wiped his face.

“Go back to sleep.”

“Are you crying?”

“No.”

Noah sat up.

“You don’t have to lie.”

Daniel looked at his son.

For the first time in five years, he told him part of the truth.

“Your mom didn’t leave us because she wanted to.”

Noah stared.

“What do you mean?”

Daniel swallowed.

“I think someone hurt her.”

Noah’s eyes filled with tears.

“Who?”

“We’re going to find out.”

Noah hugged him.

Daniel held him tightly.

And for the first time, father and son were grieving the same person together.
