Single Dad Lost His VIP Seat to a Wealthy Passenger—5 Minutes Later, Everyone Was Evicted

Chapter 3

The terminal became increasingly chaotic.

Passengers were angry.

Some demanded refunds.

Others complained about missed connections.

Richard Harrington was on the phone shouting at someone.

“This is unacceptable!”

Daniel stood near a quiet corner with Noah.

The security officer approached again.

“Mr. Carter?”

“Yes?”

“I’m sorry for the confusion.”

“What exactly is happening?”

“We’re still verifying some information.”

“What information?”

The officer hesitated.

“I can’t discuss it yet.”

Daniel frowned.

“Then why am I involved?”

“Because your name triggered an alert.”

Daniel stared at him.

“My name?”

“Yes.”

Daniel’s heart began beating faster.

“What kind of alert?”

The officer looked toward another employee.

“That’s above my level.”

Daniel looked at Noah.

The boy was watching him.

“Dad?”

Daniel crouched.

“Everything’s okay.”

“Are we in trouble?”

“No.”

The security officer smiled.

“You’re not in trouble.”

Noah nodded.

Daniel stood.

Then he noticed someone approaching.

A woman in a dark suit.

She carried an official identification badge.

“Mr. Carter.”

Daniel turned.

“Yes?”

“My name is Evelyn Grant. I’m with the airline’s corporate security division.”

“Okay.”

“I need to apologize.”

“For what?”

“For what happened to your seat.”

Daniel looked confused.

“What does corporate security have to do with my seat?”

Evelyn glanced toward Richard.

“More than you realize.”

Daniel waited.

She continued.

“Your reservation was not accidental.”

Daniel frowned.

“What do you mean?”

“The upgrade.”

“You mean it wasn’t random?”

“No.”

“Who upgraded us?”

Evelyn looked at him.

“The airline did.”

“Why?”

“Because of a contractual agreement.”

Daniel didn’t understand.

“What contract?”

Evelyn lowered her voice.

“Your company.”

Daniel froze.

“My company?”

“You own Carter Construction, correct?”

Daniel stared at her.

“I work there.”

Evelyn smiled.

“You founded it.”

Daniel looked away.

He had never publicly advertised his ownership.

Carter Construction was a small but highly respected regional contractor.

Daniel had started it after his wife died.

He had kept it deliberately small.

No flashy offices.

No expensive cars.

No public appearances.

Just a company that built schools, hospitals, and community centers.

“How do you know?”

“Because your company has an agreement with our parent corporation.”

Daniel frowned.

“I didn’t know that gave me VIP treatment.”

“It doesn’t.”

“Then why did you get involved?”

Evelyn glanced toward Richard.

“Because Richard Harrington isn’t just a wealthy passenger.”

Daniel waited.

“He’s the CEO of Harrington Holdings.”

“I know.”

“He owns the company that is currently negotiating a major acquisition involving our airline.”

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“So?”

“Mr. Harrington has been attempting to pressure the airline into giving him preferential treatment.”

Daniel looked at her.

“That still doesn’t explain the evacuation.”

Evelyn’s expression became serious.

“The moment your identification was scanned, our system flagged something.”

“What?”

“A security investigation.”

Daniel’s face changed.

“Against me?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

Evelyn looked toward Richard.

“Against Mr. Harrington.”

Daniel stared.

“What does that have to do with me?”

“Your seat assignment placed you directly next to him.”

Daniel shook his head.

“I don’t understand.”

Evelyn handed him a folder.

Inside were documents.

Daniel read the first page.

His expression changed.

Richard Harrington was under investigation for financial fraud, corporate bribery, and illegal influence over multiple transportation companies.

The investigation had been confidential.

The airline had received a legal notice earlier that morning.

The aircraft was scheduled to be inspected because investigators believed Richard might attempt to destroy evidence or influence a witness during the flight.

Daniel looked up.

“So the plane wasn’t evacuated because of me.”

“No.”

“Then why did you ask for my identification?”

“Because your company is listed in the investigation documents.”

Daniel’s stomach dropped.

“What?”

Evelyn nodded.

“Your construction company received several contracts from Harrington Holdings over the past five years.”

Daniel stared at the papers.

He had known about the contracts.

They were legitimate.

At least, he thought they were.

Evelyn continued.

“We believe some of those contracts may have been used to move money.”

Daniel shook his head.

“That’s impossible.”

“We don’t know yet.”

Noah tugged his sleeve.

“Dad.”

Daniel looked down.

“Yeah?”

“Can we go home?”

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

“Yes.”

She nodded.

“One more thing.”

“What?”

“Mr. Harrington specifically asked for your seat.”

Daniel stared.

“Why?”

Evelyn’s expression was grim.

“We don’t know.”

But Daniel suddenly remembered something.

Three months earlier, Richard Harrington had personally visited his office.

He had asked Daniel to sign a contract.

Daniel had refused.

The contract involved construction work that Daniel believed was unethical.

Richard had been furious.

Now Daniel understood.

Maybe Richard hadn’t wanted his seat.

Maybe he had wanted him off the plane.
