That winter, Daniel took Lily and Emma to the small house where Rebecca had grown up.

Snow covered the road.

Lily had asked to see it.

Emma was nervous.

Daniel noticed.

“You don’t have to compete with a memory.”

Emma looked at him.

“I know.”

“Do you?”

She smiled.

“I’m learning.”

They stood beside Rebecca’s old garden.

Daniel knelt beside his daughter.

“Your mother loved you.”

Lily nodded.

“And she would have loved Emma too.”

Emma covered her mouth.

Daniel looked toward her.

Emma cried.

Daniel laughed softly.

That night, Daniel understood what he had been unable to understand for years.
