She Was Fired for Helping a Homeless Stranger — The Next Day He Walked In as the Owner

Chapter 2

Emma spent that evening staring at the termination letter on her kitchen table.

Her younger brother, Noah, sat across from her.

“Maybe you shouldn’t have done it,” he said carefully.

Emma looked up.

“You mean helping him?”

“I mean getting fired.”

She sighed.

“I know.”

Noah pushed his dinner around his plate.

“What are we going to do?”

“I’ll find another job.”

“Rent?”

“I’ll figure it out.”

“My tuition?”

Emma looked at him.

“Your tuition stays.”

“You just lost your job.”

“I said I’ll figure it out.”

Noah looked down.

“You always say that.”

Emma smiled.

“Because I always do.”

But after he went to bed, Emma sat alone in the kitchen.

She opened her banking app.

The number was lower than she wanted to admit.

Three months of savings.

Maybe four if she stopped everything.

No new clothes.

No eating out.

No unnecessary bills.

And absolutely no missed rent.

She rubbed her eyes.

She kept thinking about the man outside the hotel.

She wondered where he had gone.

Whether he had found somewhere warm.

Whether he had eaten again.

She almost wished she’d ignored him.

Almost.

The next morning, Emma woke before sunrise.

She expected to spend the day sending job applications.

Instead, she heard a knock at the door.

When she opened it, there was no one there.

Only a large envelope.

Inside was a printed invitation.

GRAND MERIDIAN HOTEL
MANDATORY ALL-STAFF MEETING
10:00 A.M.

Emma frowned.

She no longer worked there.

Why would they invite her?

Then her phone rang.

Unknown number.

“Hello?”

A man’s voice answered.

“Emma Carter?”

“Yes.”

“This is Jonathan Blake.”

“Who?”

“Come to the hotel at ten.”

Emma recognized the voice.

Her heart stopped.

It was the homeless man.

She said nothing.

He continued.

“I owe you an explanation.”

“What explanation?”

“You’ll understand when you arrive.”

The call ended.

Emma stared at her phone.

There was no way.

She tried calling back.

The number was unavailable.

At 9:42, Emma stood outside the Grand Meridian.

She almost turned around.

She felt embarrassed.

She didn’t belong there anymore.

Then the doors opened.

Employees were gathered inside.

Managers.

Housekeeping staff.

Chefs.

Security.

Front desk workers.

Everyone was confused.

A black sedan stopped outside.

Three people stepped out.

Then the man Emma had helped the day before walked through the hotel doors.

But he was no longer wearing an old coat.

He wore a perfectly tailored dark suit.

His beard was gone.

His hair was neatly styled.

Two security professionals followed behind him.

The lobby went silent.

Emma stared.

Patricia looked even more confused.

Jonathan walked directly toward them.

He stopped in the center of the lobby.

“Good morning.”

Nobody answered.

Jonathan looked around.

“My name is Jonathan Blake.”

He paused.

“And as of eight this morning, I am the new owner of the Grand Meridian Hotel.”

Patricia’s face went white.

Emma could barely breathe.

Jonathan turned toward her.

“And there is one person in this room I came here to speak to first.”

Everyone followed his gaze.

Emma.
