She Was Fired for Helping a Homeless Stranger — The Next Day He Walked In as the Owner

Chapter 5

Emma’s first week as guest relations manager was overwhelming.

She suddenly had an office.

An assistant.

A company email.

And twelve employees reporting directly to her.

She hated the office.

It felt too formal.

So she spent most of her day walking the property.

She talked to housekeeping.

Kitchen staff.

Maintenance.

Valets.

Night security.

She asked simple questions.

What’s broken?

What’s unfair?

What are guests complaining about?

What does management refuse to fix?

Within five days, she had a list of more than sixty problems.

Jonathan read it.

Then he smiled.

“You’ve been here a week.”

“Exactly.”

“You’ve found more problems than our consultants found in six months.”

Emma sat down.

“That doesn’t mean I’m good at my job.”

“It means you’re paying attention.”

He handed her another report.

“Look at this.”

It showed a huge increase in food costs.

Emma frowned.

“Why are these numbers different from last quarter?”

“Good question.”

She started investigating.

The hotel had contracts with several vendors.

One supplier was charging nearly forty percent more than market prices.

Another had suspicious connections to a former hotel executive.

Emma followed the paperwork.

Then she found something worse.

Certain expenses were being split into smaller invoices to avoid approval limits.

She showed Jonathan.

He became serious.

“How long has this been happening?”

“Maybe two years.”

“That matches the revenue discrepancy.”

Emma looked at him.

“Someone inside the hotel is helping.”

Jonathan nodded.

“And they’re organized.”

That evening, he asked Emma to keep the investigation confidential.

“Don’t tell anyone.”

“What about the department heads?”

“Especially them.”

She nodded.

The next day, Emma received an unexpected visitor.

A woman named Claire Morgan.

She had worked at the hotel for eleven years.

She closed the office door behind her.

“I heard you’re asking questions.”

Emma carefully said nothing.

Claire sat down.

“I know where some of the money is going.”

Emma’s heart beat faster.

“Where?”

“I don’t know exactly.”

“Then what do you know?”

Claire glanced toward the door.

“Your predecessor kept a second set of books.”

“Patricia?”

Claire nodded.

“She wasn’t doing it alone.”

“Who was helping her?”

Claire looked frightened.

Before she could answer, the lights in the hallway went out.

Emma stood.

“Did someone turn them off?”

Claire grabbed her arm.

“Don’t.”

“What?”

“Don’t ask questions where people can hear you.”

The lights came back.

Claire was gone.

Emma stepped into the hallway.

Nobody was there.

On the floor beside her office was an envelope.

No name.

No stamp.

Just four words written across the front.

STOP DIGGING.
