She Was Fired for Helping a Homeless Stranger — The Next Day He Walked In as the Owner

Chapter 13

A year later, the Grand Meridian held a small outdoor wedding.

Employees attended.

Former employees attended.

Claire stood beside Emma.

Noah gave a speech.

Even some former residents from the neighborhood surrounding the hotel were invited.

Jonathan didn’t want a lavish ceremony.

Emma didn’t either.

They wanted something real.

After the ceremony, Noah raised a glass.

“To the man who got fired.”

Emma laughed.

“That would be me.”

“No,” Noah said.

He pointed toward Jonathan.

“Him.”

Everyone laughed.

Jonathan smiled.

“I was never fired.”

“Almost.”

Dinner continued late into the evening.

Later, Emma and Jonathan walked through the empty hotel.

The chandeliers were dim.

The lobby was silent.

Emma looked at the front desk.

“Remember when I stood there?”

“Yes.”

“Patricia told me I didn’t belong.”

Jonathan shook his head.

“She was wrong.”

Emma looked at him.

“You believed that immediately?”

“No.”

He smiled.

“I believed you belonged when you helped someone who couldn’t give you anything.”

They walked toward the doors.

Outside, winter air filled the street.

A man was sitting beneath the awning.

He looked tired.

Emma stopped.

Jonathan understood immediately.

Together, they walked outside.

Emma offered him food.

Jonathan brought a blanket.

The man looked confused.

“You own this hotel?”

Jonathan smiled.

“I do.”

The stranger glanced at Emma.

“She works here?”

“She does.”

The man hesitated.

“Why are you helping me?”

Emma answered.

“Because you’re cold.”

The man looked down.

“Thank you.”

As they walked back inside, Jonathan squeezed Emma’s hand.

“You know what I learned?”

“What?”

“You didn’t need me to become the owner.”

She smiled.

“What do you mean?”

“You were already a good person.”

“I know.”

He laughed.

“You’re supposed to deny that.”

“No.”

Emma leaned against him.

“I’ve spent too long doubting myself.”

He kissed her forehead.

“Don’t anymore.”

Their lives settled into something peaceful.

But not perfect.

Jonathan still had difficult family memories.

Emma still worried too much.

They argued.

They apologized.

They learned.

And the hotel remained a place where both of them remembered how everything began.
