She Took the Last Seat Beside a Scarred Stranger—Then the Whole Train Fell Terrifyingly Silent
Chapter 7
“My mother?”
The conductor nodded.
“She made a bargain.”
Emily felt dizzy.
“What bargain?”
“She wanted your father back.”
Daniel stared.
“Thomas?”
The conductor turned toward him.
“Yes.”
Emily’s mother had come onto the train years ago.
She had been searching for her husband.
According to the conductor, Thomas had discovered the truth about the railway.
He had learned that the train wasn’t simply haunted.
It was a prison.
Something ancient existed beneath the tracks.
Something that had been awakened during construction.
The railway workers had accidentally opened a chamber beneath the mountain.
Inside was an object.
A mechanism.
An artifact.
The Blackridge Watch.
It could manipulate time.
The railway company tried to exploit it.
Thomas discovered the truth.
He tried to destroy the mechanism.
He failed.
Instead, the train became trapped between moments.
Anyone who boarded during certain nights could be pulled into the same endless cycle.
Emily’s mother had found Thomas.
He was alive.
But trapped.
She wanted him released.
The conductor offered a deal.
One life for another.
She refused.
Then she discovered the watch.
She stole it.
And escaped.
But the train demanded payment.
Years later, Daniel boarded.
Lucy was taken.
The conductor claimed the debt still remained.
Emily stared at the watch.
“Why did my mother give this to me?”
“Because you were the key.”
“To what?”
“Ending the train.”
The conductor pointed toward the clocks.
“Your mother could not destroy it.”
“Why not?”
“Because she was afraid.”
“Of what?”
“Of losing you.”
Emily’s eyes filled with tears.
Her mother had spent years hiding the truth.
Not because she hated her.
Because she had been protecting her.
The conductor continued.
“She gave you the watch when you were twelve.”
“She knew I’d come here?”
“She knew you would eventually find the truth.”
Emily remembered her mother’s strange warning.
Never travel through Blackridge after dark.
Never take the last train.
Never wear the watch near the railway.
She had thought those were irrational fears.
Now she understood.
Her mother had known.
Daniel looked at the clocks.
“What happens at midnight?”
The conductor answered:
“The train resets.”
“And everyone?”
“Those who are trapped remain.”
“And the living?”
“They forget.”
Emily stared.
“So everyone who escaped forgot?”
“Most.”
“Why don’t I?”
The conductor pointed at the watch.
“Because you are carrying the memory.”
Emily realized something.
Her mother hadn’t simply given her an old watch.
She had given her the only object capable of resisting the train.
The conductor moved closer.
“Give it to me.”
“No.”
“If you destroy the watch, the train will collapse.”
“Then I’ll destroy it.”
“You will destroy yourself.”
Emily looked at Daniel.
He understood.
“If she breaks it…”
“The train will take her place.”
Emily’s heart pounded.
There was no way out.
Unless there was.
Lucy pointed at one of the clocks.
“That one.”
Emily looked.
It showed 11:59.
“What about it?”
“That’s when Daddy disappeared.”
Daniel stared.
Six years ago, at exactly midnight, Lucy had vanished.
The train had reset.
Maybe the answer wasn’t destroying the watch.
Maybe they had to return to the moment the train first took Lucy.
Emily turned the crown.
The watch began ticking.
11:59.
The control room shook.
The conductor screamed.
Every clock stopped.
Then one began moving backward.
11:58.
11:57.
11:56.
Emily realized what was happening.
She wasn’t stopping time.
She was reversing it.
Daniel grabbed her hand.
“Emily, what are you doing?”
“Going back.”
“Back where?”
“To the night Lucy disappeared.”
The train screamed around them.
And suddenly, the control room vanished.
