She Took the Last Seat Beside a Scarred Stranger—Then the Whole Train Fell Terrifyingly Silent

Chapter 9

Emily understood why the conductor had recognized her.

Why the train had allowed her aboard.

Why her mother’s watch had been waiting.

She had been connected to the train since birth.

The bargain her mother made had involved Emily.

Her mother had promised the train one day of Emily’s life.

But she had stolen the watch and escaped.

The train had waited.

For twenty-eight years.

Until Emily finally boarded.

Daniel stepped forward.

“You can’t take her.”

The voice responded.

“She was promised.”

“Promises can be broken.”

“Not here.”

Emily looked at the machine.

“What happens if I stay?”

“Time continues.”

“And if I leave?”

“The train continues.”

“So how do I stop it?”

Silence.

Then the machine opened.

Inside was a small chamber.

Emily saw hundreds of objects.

Shoes.

Photographs.

Wedding rings.

Children’s toys.

Personal belongings.

Everything left behind by the people the train had taken.

She saw Lucy’s white shoes.

Daniel’s eyes filled with tears.

“This is where they kept them.”

Emily realized the truth.

The people weren’t dead.

They were trapped in time.

Frozen between moments.

If the machine was destroyed incorrectly, they would die.

If it remained, the train would continue taking people.

There was only one solution.

Someone had to take the train’s place.

Emily understood.

“No.”

Daniel grabbed her.

“Don’t.”

“It’s me.”

“No.”

“I’m the one the train wants.”

“We’ll find another way.”

“There isn’t one.”

Lucy looked at Emily.

“Yes, there is.”

Emily turned.

Lucy pointed toward the watch.

“Mom said the watch shows the first door.”

“What does that mean?”

“The door isn’t for going in.”

Emily stared.

“It’s for letting them out.”

She understood.

The mechanism wasn’t a prison by itself.

The train was.

The machine controlled the doors between moments.

If she opened all of them at once, everyone trapped inside the train could escape.

But the train would collapse.

And whoever was inside when it happened would be trapped forever.

Daniel looked at her.

“That means you.”

Emily nodded.

He shook his head.

“No.”

She took his hand.

“You lost Lucy once.”

“I’m not losing you.”

“You won’t.”

She looked toward the machine.

“I’ll make sure you both get out.”

Daniel understood.

He hugged her.

Lucy cried.

Emily turned toward the mechanism.

The voice spoke again.

“Choose.”

Emily raised the watch.

“I choose everyone.”

The machine began spinning.

The chamber shook.

Doors appeared throughout the walls.

Hundreds.

Then thousands.

Each one led to a different train carriage.

Passengers appeared behind them.

People who had disappeared decades earlier.

They began stepping through.

Emily opened another door.

A family walked out.

Another.

Another.

The chamber filled with people.

Daniel found Lucy.

He held her tightly.

Emily kept opening doors.

Then she saw her mother.

Her mother stepped through the final door.

She looked at Emily.

“Come with us.”

Emily shook her head.

“I can’t.”

Her mother’s face broke.

“You don’t have to.”

“I do.”

“You were never supposed to pay for my mistake.”

“Mom.”

“I’m sorry.”

“I know.”

Her mother reached for her.

The door began closing.

Emily smiled.

“I love you.”

Her mother cried.

“I love you too.”

The door closed.

Emily turned back toward the machine.

The voice spoke one final time.

“You understand the price?”

Emily nodded.

“Yes.”

The watch cracked.

The train screamed.

The chamber began collapsing.

And Emily felt herself falling through time.
