She Thought Her Childhood Best Friend Had Chosen Another Girl — So She Walked Away Before He Could Tell Her the Truth
Chapter 4
Their families noticed the distance immediately.
Claire’s mother asked one evening:
“You and Ryan aren’t fighting, are you?”
“No.”
“You’ve barely mentioned him all week.”
Claire shrugged.
“We’re busy.”
Across the neighborhood, Ryan’s mother asked the same question.
He gave the same answer.
The two families had been close for years.
Every birthday.
Every holiday.
Every summer trip.
And now the silence between Claire and Ryan had become obvious.
Their annual family vacation was approaching.
Three generations would spend five days at a lakeside resort.
Claire considered skipping it.
Her mother refused.
“You’re going.”
“I don’t want to.”
“You don’t get to break a twenty-year tradition because you’re upset.”
Ryan’s mother told him the same thing.
So they went.
The journey was painfully quiet.
Their parents sat in the front of the vans.
Claire and Ryan sat in separate rows.
Neither spoke.
That night, everyone gathered around a bonfire.
The adults laughed.
The younger cousins played games.
Claire sat at the edge of the dock.
Ryan watched from across the camp.
He wanted to go to her.
She looked beautiful in the firelight.
But every time he moved, he remembered the hurt in her eyes.
Finally, he stood.
He walked toward her.
Claire noticed.
She stood immediately.
“Where are you going?”
“Nowhere.”
She turned away.
“Good.”
Ryan sighed.
“Are we going to do this all week?”
She looked at him.
“I don’t know what you want from me.”
“I want my best friend back.”
That sentence hurt more than she expected.
Because she had wanted something much more than friendship.
And maybe that was the problem.
