She Thought Her Childhood Best Friend Had Chosen Another Girl — So She Walked Away Before He Could Tell Her the Truth
Chapter 8
The next morning felt completely different.
Claire walked into breakfast holding Ryan’s hand.
Their families immediately noticed.
Her mother looked at Ryan.
Then Claire.
Then back at Ryan.
“Oh.”
Ryan smiled.
“Yeah.”
Claire covered her face.
Her father laughed.
“Finally.”
Claire stared.
“You knew?”
Her mother smiled.
“Everyone knew.”
Ryan groaned.
“We were the last ones.”
Their families celebrated more than Claire expected.
Their mothers cried.
Their fathers joked about the years they had spent waiting.
The awkwardness from the previous weeks disappeared.
But starting a relationship after being best friends for twenty years came with its own challenges.
The first date was terrible.
Ryan chose a restaurant he thought Claire would love.
Claire hated it.
Then they both laughed about it.
Their first kiss happened while trying to fix a broken bicycle.
Claire started laughing halfway through.
Ryan asked:
“Was that supposed to be romantic?”
“No.”
“Good.”
The second kiss was much better.
Slowly, friendship became something else.
Not weaker.
Stronger.
They already knew each other’s habits.
Fears.
Families.
Dreams.
But now there was something new underneath all of it.
Choice.
They weren’t together because their families expected it.
They were together because they wanted to be.
