Six months later, Ryan returned.
Claire met him at the train station.
She ran toward him.
He caught her.
“I missed you.”
“Too much.”
They laughed.
As they walked outside, Ryan said:
“I learned something.”
“What?”
“Being away from you didn’t make me love you less.”
Claire smiled.
“What did it do?”
“It made me realize how much I love the ordinary things.”
“Like what?”
“Walking home with you.”
She laughed.
“That’s it?”
“No.”
He counted on his fingers.
“Arguing over breakfast.”
“You’re terrible at cooking.”
“Exactly.”
“Stealing my fries.”
“They taste better.”
“Taking my side of the bed.”
“It’s warmer.”
Claire smiled.
Ryan looked at her.
“All the boring things.”
She leaned against him.
“Those are my favorite too.”
Their relationship survived because they didn’t try to make every moment perfect.
