She Gave a Hungry Old Woman Her Last Meal — The Reward Changed Her Life Forever
Chapter 7
Marcus Vale appeared on television the following Sunday.
He was hosting a charity event.
Smiling.
Shaking hands.
Talking about helping the poor.
Emily watched from Eleanor’s living room.
“It’s disgusting.”
Eleanor nodded.
“People like him survive because they learn how to look respectable.”
Emily looked at her.
“Did my mother know how dangerous he was?”
“She knew enough.”
“Why didn’t she expose him?”
“Because she was alone.”
Emily looked down.
“I understand.”
Then the doorbell rang.
A security officer entered.
“Mrs. Whitmore, there’s someone here.”
“Who?”
“Marcus Vale.”
Eleanor went pale.
Emily stood.
“You don’t have to see him.”
“I do.”
Marcus entered the room with two lawyers.
He smiled politely.
“Mrs. Whitmore.”
“Eleanor.”
He looked toward Emily.
“And you must be Sarah’s daughter.”
Emily didn’t answer.
Marcus smiled.
“Your mother was a difficult woman.”
Emily’s expression hardened.
“You knew her.”
“Of course.”
“You threatened her.”
His smile vanished.
“Be careful.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“You might want to remember where you are.”
Marcus ignored him.
“I came to offer a settlement.”
Emily laughed.
“How much?”
“Enough to ensure your future.”
“What’s the condition?”
“Stop digging into the past.”
Emily stared at him.
“You’ve spent twenty years hiding it.”
Marcus leaned closer.
“Some truths are dangerous.”
Emily answered quietly:
“So are lies.”
Marcus left.
The room remained silent.
Eleanor looked frightened.
Emily didn’t.
She had finally seen the man her mother had feared.
And he wasn’t as powerful as she had imagined.
Because for the first time, he was afraid of her.
