Eleanor’s health declined during the winter.

Emily spent nearly every evening at her estate.

One night, Eleanor asked her to sit beside the bed.

“I need you to promise something.”

“What?”

“Don’t let money make you forget who you were.”

Emily smiled.

“I won’t.”

“And don’t let what happened to your mother make you afraid of love.”

Emily looked surprised.

“You knew?”

Eleanor laughed softly.

“Daniel is not subtle.”

Emily smiled.

“He tries.”

Eleanor squeezed her hand.

“Your mother loved deeply.”

“Did she love my stepfather?”

“Yes.”

“What happened?”

“He betrayed her.”

Emily looked down.

“Why does love always seem dangerous?”

Eleanor answered quietly.

“Because it makes you vulnerable.”

She paused.

“But vulnerability isn’t weakness.”

Emily thought about that.

Maybe Eleanor was right.

Maybe trust wasn’t the absence of fear.

Maybe it was choosing someone despite it.

That night, Emily went outside.

Daniel was waiting on the porch.

“How is she?”

“Tired.”

He nodded.

Emily stepped closer.

“I think I’m starting to understand something.”

“What?”

“Sometimes people are worth trusting.”

He smiled.

“Sometimes.”

She kissed him.

The first time was gentle.

Careful.

But it felt like the beginning of something real.
