She Gave a Hungry Old Woman Her Last Meal — The Reward Changed Her Life Forever

Chapter 4

Emily spent the afternoon reading her mother’s letters.

There were twelve.

Some were only a few lines.

Others were several pages long.

They told the story of a woman Emily had never known.

Her mother had been brave.

Careful.

And terrified.

She had discovered that Eleanor’s attackers were using a network of shell companies to steal money from elderly investors.

Sarah tried to expose them.

That was when the threats began.

She changed her surname.

Moved between towns.

And raised Emily as quietly as possible.

The final letters were written after Emily’s birth.

One sentence appeared more than once.

I would rather you think I was poor than know how dangerous our enemies were.

Emily closed her eyes.

For years, she had resented her mother’s poverty.

Now she understood that some of it had been the price of staying alive.

Eleanor explained that she had spent years searching for Emily after Sarah’s death.

“I thought I had failed your mother.”

“You didn’t.”

“I should have found you sooner.”

Emily shook her head.

“I think you found me when you were supposed to.”

Eleanor smiled.

Then she pointed toward the brass key.

“That belonged to Sarah.”

“What does it open?”

“I don’t know.”

Emily stared at it.

Eleanor continued.

“Your mother told me that if she ever disappeared, the key would lead you to the truth.”

They searched the house for several hours.

Nothing.

Finally, Samuel suggested an old trust property Eleanor had not opened in decades.

A storage room.

The key fit a small metal cabinet.

Inside were financial records.

Bank statements.

Property deeds.

Names of companies.

Emily scanned the first page.

The names meant nothing.

Then she recognized one.

Marcus Vale.

A respected businessman.

Owner of several investment firms.

A man who had appeared in business magazines for years.

Eleanor’s face changed when Emily said the name.

“He was involved.”

“With what?”

“The attempt on my life.”

Emily’s stomach tightened.

“He’s still powerful.”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn’t anyone stop him?”

Eleanor looked directly at her.

“Because people stopped looking.”

Emily stared at the records.

Her mother hadn’t left her money.

She had left her evidence.

And now Emily had a choice.

She could close the cabinet.

Forget everything.

Or find out why her mother had been so afraid.

She closed her hand around the brass key.

“I want the truth.”

Eleanor nodded.

“I knew you would.”
